Am I armed for 2017?

momsspaghetti

Hi guys,

I'm currently not at home but will come back in June of this year. I have a gaming PC that I already built in summer 2015 at home that is equipped with the following hardware:

- i7 4790K

- asrock H97 Pro4 motherboard (please no comments on the H97 / 4790k combination. I don't overclock and only profit from the higher boost clock of the K version, works out for me)

- 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport ddr-1600

- 256GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD

- 1TB HDD from Western Digital

- Air cooling system

- NZXT S340

- Be quiet straight power 10 500W PSU

- Geforce Gtx 970 from Zotac

Now as soon as I come back I will upgrade on a GTX 1070. My question is, will the system with the 1070 be enough to play all games in 2017 on highest settings, @60 fps, in 1440p resolution?

(I'm mean triple A titles of 2017 like Ghost Recon Wildlands or Mass Effect Andromeda)

Simple answer is yes.  Longer answer is ... some maybe not at "highest settings".

You might only get medium setting on really CPU intensive games.

If you weren't upgrading to the 1070, it might not be the best system. Otherwise, it's good.

ME:A requires gtx 1060 for 1080p high setting 30fps

1440p ultra setting at 60fps ? over 9000 1080ti's

Let's agree to disagree

Your underestimating the 4790k.Sure some games you might need to crank down settings. But that's like the 1%.i bet you can get 40 ish fps on highest or 60 on medium.

To OP to eliminate it a good OC might solve that 1%

Depends what you're going to be aiming to play at.

for 1080p gaming? you're still set. Even meet ME:A minimums. And some of the recommended.

it's pretty much bang on what i'm running. i5-4670, 16gb DDR3-1600 RAM, Z87 board. only difference is i'm on stock speed CPU  (cause non k, don't laugh, i'm embarassed just saying it), and the 1070.

I'm running every game I've had at 2560x1080. About 30% less than 1440. I play every game on Max/Ultra. Including GTA.

Performance is not "60FPS", but it does play everything between 35-60+fps, which is fine for me right now.

but in the long run, if you're aiming for the true "60FPS@1440" must have. you're going to need a beefier CPU at this point.

I'm currently shopping between builds right now. Trying to decide what the money to performance sweet spot is.

Aim is to play at 1440p, while using the other 2560x1080 for media streaming (FLash / HTML5 based) content without stuttering or causing FPS drop in game, so RyZen v Intel has slowed me down.

System: R9-5950x, ASUS X570-Pro, Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070s. 32GB DDR4 @ 3200mhz.

I'd have to agree with @Rohime. For the most part, you'll be set....However, I'd honestly consider doing further upgrades for more cpu intensive games.

In short, no.

Allow me to explain myself. A GTX 1070 will provide you with amazing performance but do not expect to hit the 60FPS mark on high settings at 2K. That's not possible with 2017 AAA titles. You will be able to run games on 2K on high settings at 45-55 FPS or 60FPS at 2K, only you'll be running games on medium to high. This isn't a huge draw back at all. Medium settings often looks okay because of the high resolution. Here's a screencap from Dmitri's recent video on the 1080TI release. The 1080 struggles to obtain the 60FPS mark that you desire. That's why I predict anywhere from 45FPS to 55FPS on high settings.

Please keep in mind, the GTX 1080 was put under worst case scenarios. You'll have a great time on medium settings.

Dude, with the prices of the 1080's, if you can get an open box 1080 from a nearby Micro Center or online, I'd grab one of those. If not, grab a 1070 and you are golden my man.

8xAA is pointless. Reduce this to 2x and you have easy 75FPS+ on ultra.

I lol'd at this. As if his i7 4790k will be a bottleneck whatsoever at 1440p.

Wait for how long?

There is nothing the 1080Ti cant handle, no matter what Vega will have to offer.

But i dont plan to change my GPU anytime soon anyway. Im just curious and hope AMD can keep up in the GPU Marked too.

I would definitely say you're "armed for 2017" but there are definitely gonna be some games that give you issues on the highest settings in 1440p. You'll be able to play EVERY SINGLE game in 1440p and make it look beautiful, but you'll probably have to tone a couple things down in the most demanding of games.
