DHCP kills my Wifi

Jackestrel

So I was recently able to bridge my modem/router but that reset a bunch of connections so I had to make my IP static again.

Every time I make my IP static in the network I lose internet access. And I can't get internet access until I give myself a dynamic Ip.

pls help

-Thanks

-Thanks

If this is in Windows (or maybe any OS), you still need to specify a DHCP server.

Thanks! where can I find out where to specify it?

-Thanks

If you're assigning a static IP you do not specify a DHCP server.

DHCP assigns addresses automatically to any device on the network.

Connect to your network and try the following.

  1. Hold Windows Key + R
  2. Type cmd into the run box
  3. In command prompt type ipconfig /all
  4. Post the output into here

Also when you are configuring for a static IP could you please let us know what settings you're inputting.

IP Address: ??

Subnet: ??

Gateway: ??

DNS1: ??

Doesn't DHCP server default to default gateway?

And as to where to find it go to network adapters>> your connection properties>> IPv4/v6>>Properties>>Advanced.

Ah right, I'm thinking of DNS server. That needs to be specified if you're assigning a static IP on Windows

So anyway

  1. Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections
  2. Right click on the Wi-Fi adapter
  3. Select "Properties"
  4. In the list of "This connection uses the following items", double click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
  5. Choose "Use the following IP address" and enter the IP information
  6. "Use the following DNS server addresses" should be automatically selected. Enter the DNS server you want to use. OpenDNS is recommend, unless you don't mind using Google.

That's why I'm trying to get a read out of his ipconfig /all when he is able to connect to the network before setting a static IP.

If we know what DHCP is assigning and what he's trying to put in when setting a static we might see where he's going wrong.

192.168.1.5

255.255.255.0

192.168.1.1

192.168.1.1

My router gets the DNS server dynamically from my ISP

also i use my router as a dhcp server and have a starting range of .2 to .250

-Thanks

You can usually set a static IP address regardless if the router is acting as a DHCP server or not.

I'm not saying you can't but if the configuration that he's trying to set doesn't match the router it's not going to work.

It's possible 192.168.1.5 is already assigned. Try something higher in the range like .150

Oh, you mean netmask and default gateway.

Not so much subnet as it's a 192.168 address. On a standard set up that'll always be 255.255.255.0

I think the IP i am trying to assign is fine but ipconfig recognizes my default gatway as 192.168.1.1 but when I try to put that in it says the default gateway is not on the same network segment

-Thanks
