So I am building a new pc fairly high end gtx1080 etc(Already own the 1080 yes i know about the ti ). I am looking for a good high end sweet spot CPU for gaming etc. You know the best value/$ cpu atm. I can see myself paying like 300 ish. Thanks in advance. feel free to recommend a mobo if you would. Only need one expansion slot for the graphics card.

For gaming the i7 7700K is the only CPU you should be looking at.

Ryzen is rising. :D

R7 1700 is what I'm recommending - with decent B350 mobo, or, maybe X370.

Not a good gaming CPU though, it would be fine if the PC was only going to be used as a workstation rig.

Someone told me about the 6850k...

becuase its part of intels high end enthusiast line up, the proccesor is expensive, and so are the motherboards for a decent one, this is where ryzen comes in and gut punches intel

AMD and mobo manufacturers are working on the performance issue, so I think there's nothing to worry about it.

The 6850K is a 6 core 12 thread CPU on the X99 platform but for gaming you don't need 6 cores and 12 threads.

im going to have to a agree and disagree with your statement

not a bad cpu at all, its not as good in gamesx but thats becuase gamews prefer fewer faster cores than more but slower cores

7740k that much of a jump? Prob going to build next month.

It will still be a 4c/8t sadly, It should have been a 5c/10t or 6c/12t to show AMD that Intel can add cores to the flagship as well... but it will have polished IPC and it will be a 100% guaranteed overclocking beast  that should operate with frequencies above 5ghz regardless of silicon lottery provided cooling is sufficient.

What mobo you recommend with it? Also, since the 6850k has slower clock speed wouldn't it run slower in gaming vs the 7700k? Since gaming doesn't use all cores?

right now, games prefer less but faster cores (4c seems the sweet spot) and it can get to 5ghz with good cooling

the reason ryzen performs 'worse' in games is becuase it has more cores but these run slower :P
