so a friend of mine asked me if he upgraded his graphics card to a 1060 but kept the old card in the rig as a secondary card for his other two monitors, would they work in the same board or would he have to buy two new cards?

I dont think so as far as i know to have sli you must have two of the same cards, meaning he would have to buy two 1060 (not really needed) one 1060 is perfectly fine, check that it comes with enough ports for the two monitors though

So yes and no. They could technically work if he has the motherboard and drivers to support it, but they wouldn't work on the same game or application. Wouldn't make a whole lot of sense because he couldn't really get performance out of both together.

how many monitors are we talking about here?

because iirc a 1060 will support 4-5 monitors, and you don't have to deal with driver issues
