Change CPU core voltage mode to manual.

 

Manually set 1.4V (as a recommended maximum, 1.45 absolute maximum) as the CPU core voltage.

I'm seeing auto, adaptive, override, offset, and some combos of those. any of them sound right?

Over the maximum that intel recommends, is is turn it down to 1.2, if it is still red then the mode is wrong.

It is labeled as Manual voltage on my BIOS, so I can't tell you for certain. I would set it to 1.25V at stock speeds, boot into the OS and check in CPUID. If it is the same voltage that you set, then it is the right mode and you can go back and turn it up to 1.4V

Yup. I'm still on the x47 multiplier though - why is it still ok with 1.4v?

Automatic voltage gives it more voltage than it actually needs. I don't think you would be able to get much more than 4.7 with that voltage though. It is possible that you are right on the knifes edge of stability, expect a crash. If it hasn't crashed on its own for a couple of hours you should be fine.
