Hello all! My name is Jesse.

I'd like to start off by saying thanks to the Linus Tech Tips YouTube guys, because I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. I'm in the process of figuring out how to build, and what to buy for, my first gaming computer. They have been a massive help to me. Now, on to why I'm here.

Currently, I have found all the parts that I would like to put into my computer, and from what I understand, they are all very good. However, I've been stuck on which graphics card to use in it. I'm personally finding myself stuck between choosing either the MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Gaming X, or the MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8GB. I realize this is a comparison that's been asked a ton, but as I'm new to all of this, I feel like I still need to ask it. Mainly because they are in a great $250 or so price range, and because I didn't really see people test many games that I will be playing on it. Which will be Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition both with mods, CS:GO, Garry's Mod, H1Z1 King of the Kill, virtually all Call of Duty games, Minecraft with mods, and Escape from Tarkov. Just to name a few. I'm not a PC gaming enthusiast, but I would love for it to be my go to platform for shooters and most RPGs that aren't console exclusives.

Also, for reference, here are the parts that I will be using in my build. Please let me know if anything looks fishy, or if something could be swapped out for a better part at an equal price.

CPU: Ryzen 7 1700

Cooler: Wraith Spire Cooler bundles with 1700.

MoBo: ASUS Prime X370 Pro also bundled with the 1700.

Memory Stick Thing: 1 Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB CL 15 DIMM DDR4 2400MHz.

PSU: EVGA 600W B1 80+ Bronze.

Hard Drive: WD Blue 1TB

Case: Corsair Carbide Spec-01 mid-tower.

That's all I currently have lined up for my build. I believe it comes out to a bit over $1,000, with either of those graphics cards included. Which, if I'm honest, pains me a bit. lol I want to have a decently good computer though. Again, please, if there's anything missing, or that could be replaced with a better part of equal value, let me know.

Thank you a ton in advance for everyone's help!

1. Why no SSD

2. Maybe PSU

I would get RX 480, but if 1060 is lower price, get that.

I would go with an RX 480 (Performs slightly better in most games) and is also cheaper with some current sales and rebates.

Also, as JDE said you may want to add an SSD or you'll be plagued by realllllllllllllllllllllllllly slow loads. Which is terrible, it would improve just your casual desktop usage by a mile. Really, not even joking.

Like others have said, get an SSD

the RX480 is usually cheaper, and IMO better due to stuff like freesync, and vulkan, and DX 12 performance.

Well, I originally put I couldn't afford an SSD, but everyone is really adamant about it, and I understand the good reasoning behind it too. I'll try to get one if I can!

I can't afford the extra $100 for the SSD. I know they are amazing for things you use often, but I just can't afford it currently. What about the PSU exactly?

If you want to OC you might want a higher quality one like a XFX, EVGA (higher end) or SeaSonic. If you can't get an SSD, get a hybrid drive.

At this budget, an overclockable i5 OR a Ryzen 5 CPU would be much better. 1700 is pretty expensive

Oh wow. That's super helpful! Most people really do seem to like that RX 480. Is it pretty good longevity wise? I don't plan on really updating anything for probably 3 years.

Will a hybrid drive give me a decent performance different than just a normal hard drive?

It will give you better performance vs a normal hard drive. Its better than nothing, but an SSD is still better.

It's really good for the future, because it has really good DX12 support, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if in three years, the RX480 would be indisputably better than the 1060.

It's really an excellent 1080p gaming card.

It is expensive, at $500 for the CPU, cooler, and motherboard bundle. Isn't the 8 core 16 thread thing great for multitasking though? Something I should have mentioned was that I'm wanting to stream the games I play as well. I'm not looking for amazing graphics, but I'd like to stay at a good 1080p\60hz. Sorry for forgetting that info in the original post. ^^;

Yes, but not as good as an SSD.

I would recommend an SSD, simply because it's so convenient to have everything in your computer be snappy, and having a fast boot is awesome too.

If you're streaming, then yeah, get the 1700.

but why is it $500 for a CPU, cooler, and motherboard?

the stock cooler seems pretty damn good, so if it turns out to be decent you might not need an aftermarket one.

if you get a B350 motherboard, it shouldn't cost more than $130  $100or so. wait a few days for them to all come out.

EDIT: Noticed that some X370 motherboards are $140, so B350 should be about $100

Damn it! Spent the time to make a much better gaming-focused build with a 1070 :(

For streaming tho a 1700 would be great

I'm so sorry! D: That is an interesting build though. Especially since the price is just about the same. The only thing I get confused with is the small 240GB solid state drive. I'm always needing more space on my Xbox One, so I figure I need tons of space on my PC.

It's 240 GB because that's enough for OS and 2-3 games, and then after a while you can add in a 1TB HDD since they are only $50. It's much better than getting an SSD later and having to reinstall everything.

If you're streaming, then yeah, get the 1700.

but why is it $500 for a CPU, cooler, and motherboard?

the stock cooler seems pretty damn good, so if it turns out to be decent you might not need an aftermarket one.

if you get a B350 motherboard, it shouldn't cost more than $130 or so. wait a few days for them to all come out.

Is that too much? I thought it seemed like a neat deal since three things were bundled. This is what is all in it. Now I feel like a shmuck if it is a bit overpriced. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WVL3XFW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_lT5Syb0N0KR0M

Okay. I see what you guys mean now when you put it like that. You guys are all crazy helpful, and it's unreal. lol Thanks. I'll spring for the Samsung 250GB SSD, and get a bigger hard drive later. :D
