high ping with wireless router

Hello, I have a dsl-2740r router and i get randomly high ping and disconnection (I get request timed out sometimes looking at the ping). This happen both when the router is being used by multiple people or a single one and it doesn't matter how much they are using the bandwidth. I already looked for other wifi signals that may interfere but there is only another router on a different channel. It can be the router fault? I had it for about 10 years and in the last years started acting this way, also the router setting page doesn't always load, even after a reboot, and it has difficulties reconnetcting to internet sometimes requiring multiples reboots.

Guys, OP has 2 routers, the other one is 10 years old. The  dsl-2740r is just over 7 years old.

Yeah but it got a 2 out of 5 eggs on Newegg. So its a shit box. I would replace it with something AC just to be up to date.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Switch to wired, wireless has always been plagued with latency issues.

I would like to do that but i can't switch due to some problems.

If its the router the problem is there a good model with qos and good wifi for around 50-70 euro?

The router is not the problem, the problem is the 802.11 protocol is not perfect and even with a high quality 802.11ac access point on the same desk as my PC, I still see pings jump up every few seconds to unacceptable levels for online games and such.

but i get ping in the order of hundreds or even thousands and usually this is resolved by rebooting the router.

I see pings with latency over 100ms a few times a minute and the access point is a few feet from my PC's antennae, I've attempted to resolve this by throwing money at it (3 wireless cards and 2 wireless access points later the random high pings continue). The high pings can be ignored for most things except for online games though.
