Recommendations for ultrawide monitors

So I'm slowly losing interest in pc gaming. I thought it was this disappointed feeling I got from building my new (at the time) PC and it didn't perform as i expect. Or that maybe i just got tired of sitting at a desk all day at school, work, then for play. I found more enjoyment playing on my HTPC.

But I think its less those things and more about the display. I don't have a display to really show off the games and the performance i have under the hood. So I'm looking to replace my monitor and give ultra wide a shot. I currently have an ASUS Designo MX279H. It looks good, nice size, great color from the IPS display, and matte finish. But games never wow'd me, from playing arkham knight, wow, DOOM, Deus Ex:MD, fallout 4. They looked good but not amazing.

So I need the communities help. I want to find a comparable ultrawide. IPS/matte finish/ near the same size or larger, and at a reasonable price. There is a LG 29UM58 29" ultrawide 75hz ips monitor for 230 which is a reasonable price at my local store. But it's an older model and even though it's a 29 i know that the size is closer to a 25 or so, So if anyone can recommend another 21:9 thats better than the LG for less than 350 I would be grateful.

i don't have much experience, get dual monitor.

Not a fan of dual monitors, the bezels just break the gaming experience for me. At most i'll have the game on one monitor and then skype or teamspeak on the other and thats just a waste.

I find that monitors are something people always think they can cheap out on and neglect, when really it's the medium you enjoy the hardware through and should really be one of the biggest expenditures on a build.

But...there's so much info that we don't have!

What is the spec of your computer? Just need the CPU and GPU really, then we can figure out what monitor best fits the hardware that you currently have.

Are you looking for more pixel density? Faster refresh rate? A bit of both?

A 29" UW is about 24" 16x9 if not a little less.

A 34" UW is about 27" 16x9.

Ok first part. I completely agree with you the Asus Designo was not a cop out though, but 1080 just isn't really doing it for me. I saw a refurbished predator x34 for 700 but i missed out on it (kicking myself over that loss).

My system is:

i7-4770k OC 4.7ghz

16Gig DDR 2400

2x GTX 980 SLI OC'd

Really i like the idea of ultra wide as it fills the peripheral vision. I'd like as large as i can get but the 34" would be amazing. and i'm looking for a nice balance in image quality and reaction. I don't do competitive gaming but over 60hz with MINIMUM 5ms refresh, but i'm putting image quality over refresh / reaction times.

It's looking like the 34" version of the LG monitor is the closest but again I'd like to see options.

A lot of those are way over my budget, only two are 50-100 over the rest are a good 3x more expensive. Yeah i'd love something like the PG348Q but $1000?!

Yeah, I can do 4k, but i don't want to jump into that just yet, I'd like to wait till 4k becomes easier to reach in terms in performance. I know modern gpus can but there are games that just drop hard in FPS and I'd like to crank up the settings and get 60fps or as close as possible.

Honestly, I think a set up like that is a complete waste if you're not going 1440p.

There should be some cheaper 1440p ultrawides around. Or keep an eye out on eBay for one.

I would like a 1440p monitor but here's how i see it.

My system should be overkill for 1080, but there are some titles like Deus Ex:MD that demand a lot, even at 1080. If i were to jump from 1920x1080 to 2560x1080 then i'll still need more performance, even if its small like 15-20% then that's still 15-20% increase in demand for performance. And games like Mass Effect Andromeda that is touting a recommended i7-4790k with a 1060 6GB or 970 And thats all recommended at 1920x1080... I would need 20% more of that for 2560x1080 and that's not even going into higher fps counts. The ultrawide i was looking at had a 75hz rating.

Sure, i can get by on 1440, possibly 4k but i would suffer a lot in either performance at the same settings, or dropping settings resulting in a not as pleasant image quality. ( sacrificing shading, lighting, AA. things like that for higher resolution).

And I also get the fact that purchasing a good monitor now will pay off in the end. if i get a $1000 monitor now, that'll really show up my next few builds to come. But pricing is important, and monitor technology changes almost as fast as computer components.

I guess really it comes down to more pixels and better quality, or same quality and more screen estate.

True, but you should still be able to get pretty great performance. Even a single 1070 can do quite well at 21:9 1440p, so your set up should be able to reach the 75hz. As you go up in resolution, you go down in AA. It's common not to run any AA at all when playing at 4k because it's not really needed. Monitor tech honestly doesn't change that much. It usually takes years to come out with something new and worthwhile.

What monitor are you looking at that has 75hz? A lot of the LG monitors only do 75hz if you have AMD cards, otherwise they revert down to 60hz.

I also have to consider the fact that i'm running SLI, not every game will benefit from that, and those games are what will stress the system at 2560x1080. So if i had to go by most current experience. a game like Deus ex: MD i can get 60fps at 1920x1080 between high / very high. That game doesn't support sli so thats all on 1 card. 2560x1080 would be 20% increase in performance need. So I'll need 20% more power or lower the settings to match the loss. 1440p would be around the same although I could also lower AA. I agree with not having to run AA on higher resolutions. The higher pixel count resolves jagged edges and outlines and AA is a huge hit to performance.

The 75hz is my bad. i was looking at the 29UM58/US. A 29" LG monitor with no freesync that runs at 75hz. Then i saw the 34" version of it that also ran at 75hz. but the 34" is a freesync, I was under the impression that freesync acted as a variable where if you ran amd the monitor would match the framerates for non-tearing. without freesync i thought it would run 75hz like the 29" version.

Literally what OP mentioned, just smaller.

God take the 29 one it is  worth it, the 25 is too small ultrawide makes monitors smaller.

To OP, I have one of these LG 29 ones, they are great, the 25 is to small and the thirty four is too big for the resolution you will get pixelated, it is a great monitor and I really like it.

So I just purchased the monitor, i picked up LG 34UM58-P It doesn't use free sync  but it still rates the monitor as 75 herts refresh rate. So I don't how they did it on an IPS screen but they did. And the dynamic action sync is nice.
