My thoughts on ryzen,
The difference between the 1700 and the 1800 is only a few hundred MHz but 100 dollar increase in price,
Both chips are unlocked which would surgest that the 1800 is a better binned chip
100 dollars increase for a few hundred MHz say to me that ryzen will be a really poor overclocker in that case.
Will be interesting to see there 4c8t cpu vs a 7700k and how far they oc

And before anyone chimes in with u can't compare different architectures on clock speed yes you can because they are around the same performance in Ipc

All well a good right ?
Unless the 4c8t ryzen chip can hit 5ghz like the 7700k Intel will remain on top for gaming

they should be compared per price point I agree - no point getting excited yet though tbh

Agreed but for same core thread ratio point of view I'd like to know

You can't base it off how well it "might" overclock.

Look at the i7-7700k. It already has a 91w TDP. They easily could of given it a 4.5Ghz base clock but it would have like a 120w TDP at that point which they won't do.

Remember the i7-7740k that was revealed/leaked or whatever? That is supposed to have a TDP of over 100W.

Ryzen already is doing something amazing with having the R7 1700 being an 8c/16t CPU at 65w. Depending on how much people want to bump voltage ect, it very well may reach 4.5-4.6 on average. Which again, for an 8c/16t is amazing.

The 1700x and 1800x are also going to be binned higher, the 1700x may OC to ay 4.7-4.8GHz on average meanwhile the 1800x may go to 5GHz on average. (obvs just random numbers I came up with)

Also.. you can't base it off clock for clock, in reality we know the IPC is close, but it still isn't the same.

As I said, no point getting excited yet, weve seen a few leaked benchmarks, need to wait

How ever impressive that is

no build a 1000 pound plus gaming pc and then worries about the extra 10 pound difference on the electric bill per year

7700k will most likely be the best for performance in games but if Ryzen equivalent is half the price, and comes with a cooler, which means that motherboard+cooler+cpu will be about the same price as just 7700k, then there should be no reason to even consider that i7 if it won't get discounted.... unless you watch 4k Netflix?

It matters in pre-builts ect... Which is a big market believe it or not.

And think of it this way... who said the R7 series was meant to be a gaming CPU? No one.

In theory, less cores = higher frequencies. With them already pulling off a "theoretical" 4.0Ghz+ Base clock (With XFR it may be like 4.1-4.2 on stock cooling) on an 8c/16t CPU, what will the R5 1600x be? Being a 6c/12t CPU, in reality should have a higher base clock. And if it doesn't, it should OC better. Maybe reaching frequencies of 200-300Mhz higher than the R7 lineup. Which would in theory make it a better gaming CPU. We simply do not know. Just like we don't suggest the i7-7700k for gaming rigs, we probably won't be suggesting the R7 1700/x and 1800x for gaming rigs.

One of the reasons for the price increase is the better cooler.

Other than that, who knows. We really didn't get a great deal out of the release or Linus's video that we didn't already know.

We still have to wait until March 2nd or 3rd to get real benchmarks.

I feel sorry for anyone who's going to just go out and preorder this. Though there are die hard AMD fans.

You kind of contradict yourself there. You say they won't compare in performance...so why would they ever lower their prices?

Depends on the performance the most I think. I mean, look at the cooler Intel includes. Who's to say the 65w cooler isn't as shit and will also get tossed aside? We just don't know. Making any of these conversations rather pointless.

So far the motherboards haven't been tooo great. If there isn't an mITX board with a decent number of USB ports then I'm going with a 7700.

Just because IPC is similar doesn't mean that the clock speed is indicative of anything because CPUs are in fact way more complicated than that.
