on overwatch possibly, but nothing else, if your looking to do 144hz at 1440p on games then only the lower end competitive ones that have minimal performance requirements will you get over 100+

It'll struggle but should run it, if you want to run it without any issues get a 1070 or 1080 instead.

My 1080 doesn't do 160fps 1440p  @ max settings.

Depending on how much you turn down I would say on low maybe but medium is probably not possible.

Based on http://www.techspot.com/review/1180-overwatch-benchmarks/page3.html …

You can probably manage 1440p at something close to 144 FPS if you turn down some settings. I think the GTX 1060 is comparable to the GTX 980, and that benchmark suggests around 100 FPS at Ultra with that card provided your CPU is fast enough to stay out of the way.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Look at these benchmarks: http://hothardware.com/reviews/overwatch-pc-gameplay-and-performance-analysis-blizzards-first-shooter-soars-high?page=3

At 1440p the 1060, which is equivalent to a GTX 980, will hit only about 74fps on the highest settings. Which is not bad, but not even close to 144. I think you will have to drop the settings a bit, and you might be able to hit 144fps on medium settings or something.

If you want to turn it up all the way, you will have to get a 1070 or 1080, but even then it is not certain you will get 1440p 144fps.

By the way: Just because your monitor is 1440p 144hz, doesnt mean you HAVE to hit 144fps. Anything over 60fps is fine, although you wont get the maximum out of your monitor.

could one of these do 4k 30fps in slower paced games like cities skylines? visual fidelity and resolution matter a lot in games like that

I suggest you take a look at the RX 480 8GB or the R9 Fury (it's around 260$ now) cause the 480 is a few % faster than the 1060 at 1440p and the Fury is another 10-15% faster than the 480 at 1440p.

I was considering the 1060 for 1440p too, but ya think the 480 will be better?

Depending on the games you are playing a 1070 for rock solid 144fps in 1080p and janky 144fps in 1440p(again game dependent) and a 1080 for 1440p 144fps.

74 fps on highest settings not that i will run it at the highest settings so seems good enough

Yeah, wider memory buses help Radeon cards lose less performance when transitioning to higher resolutions than on Nvidia GPUs. (at least of that budget range)

Well, the Fury was released as a 1440p card, and it really does very well, gets close to a 980Ti.

I meant 480 and 1060. He better stay 1080p and have solid high fps or buy a faster GPU.

Ah, sorry, I also mentioned the Fury earlier so I wanted to clear that up...

Anyway, if he really wants 1440p and doesn't have too much money, there is nothing better than the Fury at 260$ atm, the 480 is also a better choice than the 1060 cause it's just a bit faster at 1440p + it's cheaper (usually).

Without a faster GPU OP would need to drop graphical settings down, it depends by how much is he willing to drop those settings. I have an OC'd GTX 970 + 5820K in a second workstation-oriented rig at home paired with a high-end DELL 1440p IPS panel and when you adjust the settings well-enough, it can handle AAA titles. But it's far from what I'd call optimal, luckily that PC is rarely used for gaming besides LoL and the 970 is plenty for that :P

Ya. And it depends on the Game of Course. Fury for 280 sounds good. Not everyone is so stupid to buy a used car as gpu ?

Yeah, I must agree.

If you are okay with low or medium settings, then yes.

I'd say:

1440p Medium settings Overwatch: GTX 1060 or 480. But I doubt you would get up to 144 fps. Probably between 100-144 fps.

1440p high settings Overwatch: get a GTX 1070 or 1080, but even then you probably wont reach 144 fps.

doesnt change the fact that a 1060 isnt enough for 1440p at 144hz in almost any game unless u play lowest / low settings which isnt worth it imo

8700k/1070ti/16gb ram
