Not really, if you NEED an upgrade for CPU intensive tasks, just see what Ryzen offers. Not like you're in dire need of an upgrade

depends on your budget, if you want to spends quite a lot and get a hex or octa core (wait for zen if you are thinking of this) then yea, it's probably worth it (assuming you can use that many horses) that also being said if you don't then the 4790K is perfectly fine as newer intel CPUs don't offer much more than what you need, so if you really want either way, wait for zen

The owner of "too many" computers, called

The Lord of all Toasters (1920X 1080ti 32GB)

The Toasted Controller (i5 4670, R9 380, 24GB)

The Semi Portable Toastie machine (i7 3612QM (was an i3) intel HD 4000 16GB)'

Bread and Butter Pudding (i7 7700HQ, 1050ti, 16GB)

Pinoutbutter Sandwhich (raspberry pi 3 B)

The Portable Slice of Bread (N270, HAHAHA, 2GB)

Muffinator (C2D E6600, Geforce 8400, 6GB, 8X2TB HDD)

Toastbuster (WIP, should be cool)

loaf and let dough (A printer that doesn't print black ink)

The Cheese Toastie (C2D (of some sort), GTX 760, 3GB, win XP gaming machine)

The Toaster (C2D, intel HD, 4GB, 2X1TB NAS)

Matter of Loaf and death (some old shitty AMD laptop)

windybread (4X E5470, intel HD, 32GB ECC) (use coming soon, maybe)

And more, several more

Don't think there is a really worth it upgrade for his purpose. Do you actually run into limits? There are currently 2 better gaming chips then, with the 6700k and 7700k OCed to atleast 4.8 should hold some performance increase, but if it is worth the dosh for new CPU and plaform? Doubt it.

Think the 5820k will perform less then his current CPU for this purpose in most cases. More cores/threads then 4 help, but despite already years that multi threaded usage improves, many games benefit more from higher clockspeeds. But there might come a point where that crosses eachother again in the future. But I don't think we are there yet with multi threaded optimalization according to most several current gen games benchmarks.

Well, newer games, like Watch_dogs 2 and Battlefield 1 use 12 threads and most DX12 games should be able to do the same.... But let's not forget PCIe lanes, with a 5820K you can 2 way SLI with one card running at 16x and the other at 8x, while with the 4790K both cards are running at 8x...

More threads used does not mean it is more optimal then his current setup, and the PCI lanes x8 vs x16 is no real factor in performance currently to my knowledge. Also for many games (also that are still comming and will be released) DX12 is no automatically better then DX11. DX upgrades trickle down trough time over some years in the games until it actually always is better, as also was the case with previous DX swaps. Not denying the better potential DX12 has, but we are far from saying that it alwasy performs better, it just takes time.
