$250 Gaming Headset

Icebonez

So I've basically got around $250 for a really nice headset. I've never really used a headset for gaming but I have heard it makes a huge difference in hearing footsteps and surroundings and such. I am looking for some nice looking headphones (preferably black/red to match my setup) that has great sound quality and come with a good mic. Anyone have any recommendations on a headset? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

To be honest, you're best getting a decent audio headset and then using an Antlion ModMic. Most gaming headsets are really quite poor and have a premium on them by their nature of being marketed for gamers.

I recommend AudioTechnica ATH-M50X.

I agree with the first part but m50x LOL.

I hope people didn't agree and thumbs up on that.

headphones + mic and not the M50x.

There is a nice pinned post you could give a look.

Just to be sure, stay the F away from the M50x, over hyped headphones with zero soundstage.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Beyerdynamic DT990(really any good HEADPHONES will work) + antlion modmic > Any "gaming headset"

Of course you will need an amp to power the DT990's if you were to buy the 250 ohm version. I would ask around about what people use for an amp, but Fii0 and schiit make really good products.

Beyerdynamic DT990- https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT990-PRO-250ohm-Straight/dp/B010IJ9W1U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487199546&sr=8-2&keywords=dt990

FiiO e10k- https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-E10K-Headphone-Amplifier-Black/dp/B00LP3AMC2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1487199503&sr=1-1&keywords=FiiO+e10k

Schiit Magni 2- http://schiit.com/products/magni-2

Modmic 5- https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-Modular-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B01MCYRKY3/ref=sr_1_1?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1487199618&sr=1-1&keywords=modmic+5

A1 setup right there. Either of those amps will do for the DT990's, so its personal preference but I would go with the Schiit Magni 2.

For 250ohm headphones you are going to want to buy an amp, otherwise why would you buy them if you know they won't reach their full potential without an amp. I understand that onboard will power them, but the experience won't be as good as it could have been with an amp.

You can't say that this easily.

My dt880 250ohm sound 'good' on all sources, phone, pc, amd/dac etc.

My k7xx however need an amp to sound good. I can't stand them on my phone.

I think I need to clear something up for you.

Ohm is such a little part of how hard headphones are to drive, basically everything today supports 32-600 Ohm, way way back in the day sure Ohm rating mattered, but today it doesn't really matter.

The sensitivity/efficiency of the driver is what matters the most.

I made a nice little segment in my post about how to calculate the requered power for X headphones and showed that headphones with a lower Ohm rating can be way harder to power, than headphones with a higher Ohm rating.
