1070 edges out the 980Ti in a few categories, and is equal in the rest.

CUDA core count only matters within the same generation. 10 Maxwell CUDA cores is double 5 Maxwell CUDA cores, but 10 Pascal CUDA cores is not double 5 Maxwell CUDA cores.

also clock speeds vary wildly between both cards.

For content creation the 980Ti is better because it has more CUDA Cores and has a wider memory bus (384 bit vs 256 bit on the 1070), for gaming the 1070 is better because it has an extra 2GB of VRAM and allows access to all of the new features such as Simultaneous Multi-Projection.

Not in gaming or most other programs since they are older generation.

I can confirm, my friend has a pretty much identical build than mine, except he has a 980 ti and my PC beats his in most benchmarks. And I would always go with newer generation just for added features and prolonged support. Except if you can find a 980 ti for a lot cheaper price than a 1070.

Less cuda cores in the 1070 be cause they are more efficient per clock, and have a higher clock speed, so it is a little faster than a 980ti but if you get lucky with a 980 TI overclock it can basically have the performance of a moderately overclocked 1070 (at least in my experience)

if you can find a 980ti for significantly cheaper than a 1070, then i would get a 980ti. if not, get a 1070.

also the 980ti's overclock scaling is a tad better than the 1070, so i would bet on a nice AIB 980ti to get high overclock numbers (also a decent PSU)

...No

I mean Maxwell and Pascal, NVidia's two newest GPU architectures.

What? can you explain the CUDA cores?

I think he meant to say 5 Maxwell cores equal 10 Kepler cores. In short, since Maxwell and pascal are different generations (980ti being the former and 1070 being the latter) the efficiency of the cores changes and does not equal that of previous generations, so while the 980 ti has more cuda cores, the 1070's are a different architecture and thus faster per core (albeit at a higher clock speed)

980Tis OC better than 1070 does. Ref 1070 vs Ref 980Ti, 1070 will win hands down.

But a 980Ti with a good factory OC and a ref 1070... 980Ti will win.

Sure, but you can OC a GTX1070 too. it might not be as much of an OC, but its still enough to put a OC'd GTX 1070 ahead of a OC'd 980Ti

Didn't notice you underlined anything. oops.

but my statement is still correct. 10 Maxwell CUDA cores IS double the power of 5 Maxwell CUDA cores.

it was an example of correct comparison of CUDA cores.

10 Maxwell cuda cores are not double 5 Maxwell cuda cores. it is double Kepler. I think that is what you are trying to say.

why not?

5 x 2 = 10

Double of 5 is 10

I see what he is going for here, but its just a bit of an odd way to describe it, maybe like this:

10 maxwell cores are twice as fast as five, but 10 pascal cores are more than double the performance of 5 maxwell cores.

I'm not sure if you are trolling or not reading what you are writing... You are saying that Maxwell is double Maxwell which is THE SAME GENERATION. That is why it isn't making sense.

the text is so big it's a wonder you cant see it.

TEN Maxwell CUDA cores are double as powerful as FIVE Maxwell CUDA Cores

This is because ten is a bigger number than five
