If you get an SSD, your system will fly. Of course, your Core 2 Duo will show its limits when you install programs, extract/compress zip files, and of course gaming performance will not increase, because all that is the CPU at work here. But your system will boot up a lot quicker, everything will be fast and responsive.

I don't see what you can upgrade... if you upgrade the CPU, that means getting new motherboard, power supply (as probably the ACPI version difference won't work, or lack needed plugs), and RAM (will need DDR4). And assuming you get a Core i5 latest gen, the Intel integrated graphics should be around the GTX 730 that you have now. So essentially, beside the case and HDD,... you just replaced the whole computer. Might as well spend another 100$ and get an nice and fast SSD as well. Especially that your face will be filled with disappointment once you build it with that HDD, to only realize it is just as slow as your Core 2 Duo when starting Windows, programs, etc.

Upgrading the GPU is useless, your CPU is the limiting factor here. Upgrading the RAM, assuming you use Windows 8 or 10, you'll have no performance increase.. and even Windows 7 actually. If anything with Win7 it is will be minor, definitely not worth the money, especially that DDR2 is now hard to find, unless you go with the used market.

So yea, SSD is your best bet if you are still happy with your system, and you will want to upgrade it. My mother computer has the same specs as yours actually. I upgraded her to an SSD (Samsung 840 EVO.. getting something faster is not really worth it, already that SSD will be same cost as the value of your system), and it made a world of different. The computer feels like it got a massive upgrade.
