Connecting a controller to a Mac to play steam games

Hey guys, I want to play steam games (mostly just rocket league) with a controller such as the xbox controller or play station controller on my 27 inch late 2015 mid-tier Mac (currently running macOS Sierra). Which controller would be the best option (price is nothing to worry about), and how would I go about connecting it? Thanks.
