Don't do crossfire. If you can afford two 480s then buy something better, like a 1070.

i agree with @Enderman a single gpu configuration is always the better choice. Due to the fact it's a mixed bag on what games support crossfire and how well they support it. Some won't even use the other card so once again always go for a single powerful card than two weaker cards.

But the mg279q, with freesync, is $250 cheaper then pg279q, with g sync.

I do agree Free sync is the better option. It's quality, more affordable and the margin between the two is little. I don't think it's worth opting out of a whole variety of games that will not scale because you are running more than one card. Honestly I don't know much about the cards but what about saving for volta and see whats available from nvidias side? I own the rx480 xfx gtr black edition 8gb variant (and gtx 1070) and have gotten another from a friend to run in crossfire and there are some games that scale great such as battlefield games, crysis 3, and gta 5. But other issues where it actually preformed worse or didn't scale at all with games like tomb raider, hitman, dues ex etc... So I honestly think waiting in the next quarter or two to see how volta and vega will compete. It's more of a value if you go for a 1070 or wait for both sides to reveal their newest products. (Sorry I can't grammar and format because I'm working haha)

Also from what I know it's up to the developers to code/program in compatibility for crossfire and sli. I believe that also requires a lot of work time and effort to benefit a small minority of pc gamers/enthusiasts. I see that cards are becoming more powerful and affordable so moving away from multi card setups is a smarter idea for developers and consumers alike. Now this could just be me but I see a major increase in graphical fidelity in the latest lineup of gpus from both sides due to the fact that even an rx480 can be a capable 1440p card with the right amount of tweaking. Hell even my 1070 is a great 4k card if I set my expectations correctly. That's also could be wrong because as the power of our hardware progresses so does the amount of resources newer games will need. (as it always has) The other major point that most would know is that 4k is becoming more of an option now a days(Although most people don't own a 4k display of any sort. Even though the prices of the panels themselves have become a lot more affordable since they've dived into the "mainstream"). I'm not necessarily saying that were phasing out of 1080p but I'd like that to become more of a norm (moving out of 1080p) because of a variety of reasons that I could dive into but would rather now (AA, cramming so much into that res, etc) I also prefer 1440 or 4k on med settings to high rather than 1080p maxed out. But hey everyone has a preference of sorts.

Bottom line. I'd just wait and save your money and see what nvidia and amd both have to offer in their next lineup of gpus.

*Sorry I still suck a grammar and formatting. I also apologize for rambling so much.*

I would be patient and wait for Vega then.
