Hello,

I've been hunting for a CPU to replace my old one in my HP-Pavilion P7-1534 (Link for My PC Specs). It is pre-built with an AMD processor, which means the upgrade will also need to be AMD in order for it to fit. I'm trying to match the recommendations of GTA V, which would be 8 cores. I'm not even sure if my PC can go over 4 cores according to the upgrades the motherboard supports(Below). If it could, would I need to upgrade my power supply too? If not just the power supply, what else do I need for compatibility?

Processor

AMD A8-5500

  • TDP: 65W

  • Operating speed: 3.2 GHz (up to 3.7 GHz turbo)

  • Number of cores: 4

  • Socket: FM2

Processor upgrade information

  • Socket type: FM2

  • Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

    Processor
    TDP
    Trinity Dual-Core A4-5300
    65 W
    Trinity Dual-Core A6-5400K
    65 W
    Trinity Quad-Core A8-5500
    65 W
    Trinity Quad-Core A8-5600K
    100 W
    Trinity Quad-Core A10-5700
    65 W
    Trinity Quad-Core A10-5800K
    100 W

You could upgrade and have 15.6% more performance, but what is 15.6% better than shit? Get a new mobo, i5, and some more RAM. Get two 4G sticks and run them with two of your existing 2G sticks.

A used Sandy Bridge combo would be cheap and immensely better.

Black Knight-

Ryzen 5 5600, GIGABYTE B550M DS3H, 16Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Asrock RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming,

Seasonic Focus GM 750, Samsung EVO 860 EVO SSD M.2, Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe, Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon

MSI B450 A Pro, Ryzen 5 3600x, 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Silicon Power A55 512GB SSD, Gigabyte RX 5700 Gaming OC, Corsair CX430

The A10 5800k would be a significant upgrade for you.

But you're best off not sticking with APU's, if you really want to game on Very High/Ultra.

I'd personally say wait for Ryzen, then get an AM4 motherboard and the Ryzen 4-core.
