Older HHD problem with 64bit windows?

Go to solution Solved by Ryujin2003,

Maybe you have some bad sectors. According to Microsoft, 32bit takes up less space that 64bit due to architecture requirements. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications

So, you could have a bad sector that the 32bit install doesn't reach, but the 64bit does. It thinks it is installed, boots and finds the sector is bad. Maybe run chkdsk or some other hardware testing tool, such as from Seagate or WD, and see if you have some bad space on there.

Hi so ive been trying to install windows 10 on 2 older hdd's iv got for a pc for a friend. One is a 3.5" 80gb other 2.5" 150gb both sata drives.

problem is the 150gb one wont install 64bit windows. it finishes the preparing install then when it restarts to start the install it blue screens. Installing the 32bit version works fine.

the 80gb drive doesnt seem to install at all regardless of 32/64 bit but will store files fine so isnt buggered. both drives are over 10years old not sure exact years etc or brands but can maybe find out if needed..

any idea or suggestions on getting 64bit on the 150gb drive?

What the blue screen say? And what mode are those drives running at? AHCI?

didnt write it down but was a 0x000000 type thing of randoms letters numbers. IDE as SATA is the pc its used in running 32bit right now. ACHI mode doesnt work for some reason, it doesnt pick up any drives. I used my main pc which is a i3 6100 system to install the OS as the other pc doesnt pick up the usb as a bootable devices. If the error code will help alot i will try install as 64bit and write it down exactly

On the back of the drive, near the data and power connections, there will be 8 pins in a rectangle, 2 rows of 4. If there is a small pin connecting two of the pins, note where it is, and pull it off. (If its there.)

I cannot give you an exact reason why you would have a jumper on that HDD. Back in the dark ages on PC electronics, jumpers were used on PATA devices to set up the Master-Slave relationship between HDD and Optical drives. Others then used then in SATA-II drives for enhanced or alternate features, such as limiting disk speed or bandwidth, or some other troubleshooting options. Each drive is different. I'd have to look up your exact make/model to figure out why you would have them. Generally speaking, you shouldn't have them unless the manufacturer specifically requires it. Thats why I say take note of where it is (if it's there). That way you can put it back if taking it out doesn't work (if it's even there).

Jumpers on HDD's have pretty much gone extinct as far as I'm aware.

I still think you have a bad sector. I would plug it into another PC and do some testing on it. I'm pretty sure Seagate will let you download a testing tool for free.

thank you am in process of this now. If there is bad sector can the drive be used still but with less space or is it usless?

Check to see if the rest of your parts support the 64bit OS
