I'm wondering what would be better to get with the displayed options I have.

What I'm looking for is to upgrade my current MB, CPU and RAM since it's running old. I'm going with an intel i5-2500, 6GB of DD3 RAM and I'm not 100% on how fast it is, and my MB is an old 1155 socket Z68X-UD3H-B3 from Gigabyte.

I've had this system since 2009 or 2010 and have had minor upgrades like SSD, new GPU and PSU but nothing to it's "core" parts.

Now I'm looking to upgrade little rig once more but more majorly.

One of my options is a pre-determined upgrade:

8GB DD4 RAM (Corsair Vengeance LPX)

i5-6600K  CPU

Asus Z170-P Motherboard

I decided to make my own upgrade to see if I could somehow make it cheaper but also a tad bit stronger.

i5-7400 CPU

Exact same RAM.
MSI Z170A Motherboard

My knowledge of parts isn't vast enough to know gritty details like the difference between these two setups so I'm asking here in luck of someone helping me.

I'm not looking to overclock, do any extensive media work, just casual gaming which with the wants of having a smooth experience.

My other parts are:

MSI GTX 760 2GB

Kingston 124 GB SSD

Two WD HDD's, one on 250GB and one on 1TB

ok, so the first option is better, although the 7400 may be the newer generation, the difference in performance is negligible, the 6600k easily outclasses the 7400 - is really just a slightly faster i5 6400

What would you suggest to have instead then? Run with the 6600K?

I like the first build/upgrade.  if you want to upgrade something in the future get a better gpu.

That's a definate plan I'm having. But I would rather want my MB, CPU and RAM be up to date in beforehand. The 760 is by no means a bad card for today. Not high-grade or anything like that but it definitely works to game with a decent result.

or, go with the i7 6700 and a b150 mobo to offset the cost - the 6700 has 8 threads vs the 6600k's measly 4

What would be a fitting b150 MB then? I see that they are cheep but most seem to be for DD3 systems.

i would recommend a i7 6700 and any of these mobos
