Need Horizontal 88W+ air cooler

Jonathan W

A.K.A. Dissapointed with AiO, back to Air!

The cooler needs to be horizontally opposed, not going to restrict my RAM height beyong reason, and keep a 4690K [88W] nice and cool at load

Hey all. So I have a Corsair H60 right now and at idle it is great, keeps everything nice and cool around 35-40C
BUT the second I max out my 4690K, even without overclocking [3.7GHz turbo] my CPU sits at a toasty 80C, 100+ if I OC.

So I've tried everything to get it cooler, my fans are on a fairly aggressive curve, I leave the panel off my case mostly, and I quadruple checked that the molex plug my pump is plugged into was getting proper power.

idk what else to do except replace the thermal compound but I used Arctic Silver and it's only been barely like a year and a half.

So i'm looking to change everything up. When I upgrade i'm getting a non-K chip, and I'm looking at Horizontally opposed air coolers because i'll be vertically mounting my rig again and wanna see that cool fan as it spins.

Looking at these coolers the "best" one seems to be the Silverstone AR06 but if I know the LMG forums, someone will have some secret one up their sleeve they can tell me about..so please do that <3

Those are some pretty insane temps on your 4690k - mine is OCed to 4.4ghz, and sits at around 65C under load, with not all fans at 100%, using a dark rock 3..

The reason for your disappointment is probably because single rads are pretty shit. I wouldn't get a single-fan rad AIO, ever.

120/140mm radiators hardly challenge their air counterparts. The only time you should generally ever use one is on a GPU or if you have a really tight space and it's the best thing that fits.

For reference, the air cooler that we're trying to beat right now is the Silverstone AR06. Linus gave it his best performer medal in that air cooler showdown video.

Have you tried delidding?

Rly. Going 0-100 real quick there... a bit of an extreme solution, which will have near to no gains too.

That's why I marked it as "funny" lol, delidding is NEVER going to happen on my system

Depending on the chip you can get massive gains. If I had the money to replace my CPU if a delid went wrong, I could easily drop 10C+ because of how abysmal the IHS contact with the die is (based off a much hotter Q6600 on the same cooler running MASSIVELY colder at a much lower RPM).

If you had that kind of money, you should have enough for a 280mm or 240mm AIO

I don't wanna spend 150USD+ for the "proper" AiO I should get to get good performance lol...the cost of potentially 2 new CPUs is WAY out of the question xD

By horizontally do you mean tower with horizontal orientation or down-draft cooler? Which RAM and which case?

By Horizontally I mean that the fan is laying down parallel to the motherboard. The case i'll be working in is the new inwin 303c when it comes out in Q2 2017 but for now i'm in a cooler master HAF EVO XB. I plan to be using full height or slightly higher than full height RAM like the GEIL EVO X or similar RGB LED RAM sticks [right now im using Ballistix Tracer Orange/Blue]

InWin 303 (the one which is already available) has 160mm clearance, so its any horizontal/downdraft cooler. The RAM does look about same height as G.Skills RipjawX DDR3. Since you are going for looks, Noctua is out. Phanteks has PH-TC14CS with few color options. Scythe has Kabuto 3 and Grand Kama Cross 3. All three are somewhere between 120mm and 140mm tower coolers.

Thanks a ton man. The point of doing a horizontal cooler is so I can put a fancy fan there and show it off along with the other 3 fans in the vertical top portion of the case.

I've been looking at some coolers designed like the PH-TC14CS but I've been avoiding them on principal because i'm worried about the heat pipes bending over time...do you or anyone you can quote has any experience of that happening? I call that cooler design a "floating" radiator.

Can you bend copper pipes by hand? Coolers use copper pipes with aluminium coating for the looks. Just fan isn't going to bend them that easily.

Ok. I haven't heard any such bending with coolers. Maybe there's some. But probably not in first 10 years of use.

Im thinking of potentially silver glittering the cpu fan on this build with rgb led strips to try and make it look something like spinning steel to match the "Hephaestus" theme of steel and flowing lava and such...i'm looking at the noctus, the red phanteks, or the scythe kama cross 2...
