A GTX 1080 is too much imo for only a 1080p display

You are spending too much on NVME drive but regardless add in a HDD for more storage

Why not a Blu-Ray drive already

Do you need PRO Windows?

I would get Asus STRIX for RGB and match with that motherboard more or an ASUS Aura sync mobo too with ASUS arua sync board and a case (Noctis 540 ROG for example)

Going up to an x99 would increase the overall budget by a good amount correct? Few hundred.?

Correct. For gaming it's not worth it imo.

Not much, really.

Mobo should be ~ same price as it's fairly expensive already.

5820k on Ebay is 370USD, which is just a bit more expensive than your current 7700k.

All for a more solid platform and better upgrade path.

EDIT: Found a buy it now for $335USD. So actually it would be cheaper than your 7700k.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Get this monitor instead, it is 165hz and has Gsync as oppose to yours having freesync on a 1080

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0149QBOF0?tag=linus21-20

with that monitor its a really good build. the cpu will be relevant for a long time especially in the future as we get to use more cores in gaming, just throw in a graphic card in the future you will be good to go.

look at optimized games also the 5820k single core performance is not bad its really good. also

-snip-

Only BF1 and the increase is like ~20fps. But it would give OP a more future proofed PC. Not sure. I would get a nice aesthetically Asus AURA board Z270 (as x99 costs too much) and would be amazing to look at rather than getting extra 20fps on an already 100fps+ game

Getting a Z170 w/ 7700k means losing a bunch of the platform features, arguably one of the best reasons to go Kaby Lake.
