So I've had my new PC for around 2 months now. It's running Windows 10 pro but it's not activated. I finally decided to activate it and I'm looking for cheap keys because I don't wanna pay $100+. While exploring that avenue and trying to verify the reliability of these unscrupulous keys I saw a thread on this very forum suggesting to just use something that's not Windows if you're not willing to pay. SO my question is as follow: Should I use something not Windows? If so, what should I use? Bearing in my mind that my use case is just gaming and that Windows is all I've ever known and I know absolutely nothing about any other OS, hence this question. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dealscube and Kinguin. You can also just leave it unactivated.

Edit: If you're doing fine with Windows 10, stick with it since DX12 support is Windows 10 only for now.

Every game is gonna compatible on windows. So if ur only gaming it would be best to just have windows. If you wanna try something different and more challenging you can use linux and wine.

Unsure what power supply to pick?

Check out my HTPC build.

I am aware of sites such as those. But I am very doubtful of Kingpin's legitimacy in an already grey area. I am aware that Paul's Hardware recommended it but having done some research I really wouldn't feel comfortable going with them. Can't find the link but there was one case I saw in a thread where a guy's steam code didn't work, he tried to ask support but they bounced him around for 2 weeks then tried to get his steam username & password. I will look into Dealscube but my question still stands for other OSs.

Thanks

I was worried about compatibility but I heard others saying that Valve has a lot of things working on SteamOS

Literally does not matter, you can reinstall windows as many times as you want now with OEM or retail.

There is no difference as of windows 10.

I would love to know what the difference is.

Well OEM keys are real and legit but it's just that usually the OEM keys sold by Kinguin and others are taken off an EOL machine where they deactivate them and sell them however this slightly breaks Microsoft's terms and conditions so... :P

Are they real keys and legal? Yep

Are they a bit in the grey area? Yep

Edit: OEM keys are also the keys a system builder would use but sometimes they're unused thus sold.

OEM is what system builders use when they sell you a PC with windows on it.

You know that you can buy official OEM keys just like retail keys directly from a store right?

There is nothing grey about them...

Quote
original equipment manufacturer

An original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is a company whose products are used as components in the products of another company, referred to as the value-added reseller (VAR). The OEM generally works closely with the company that sells the finished product and customizes designs based on that company's needs.

That's because I live in canada and use bestbuy.ca.

The US one does sell them.

Same with NCIX, memory express, and literally every other computer store.

I wonder why you don't know a lot about OEM...
