Need help on new build!

My brother in law asked me how much it would cost to build or purchase a pre-built PC for using Autodesk Inventor. I have been looking at forums and such and have not found any consistent answer as to specific recommendations. I have a good amount of experience with building gaming PC's but not much experience when it comes to workstation PC's. I have reason to believe he would need at least an i7 (product page says single core performance is most important) with a decent amount of ram. When it comes to graphics cards I am not completely sure what he would need. Any thoughts and help are welcome!

Ok, We need a budget for 1. 

2. i7 have MORE cores and not necessarily better single core performance.

3. Is it only for cad? or will he be doing more things.

if you can afford a i7 get a i7

Actually, it usually does mean better single core performance. You forget that each core on an Core i7 has two threads due to hyperthreading, rather than one. One physical core, and an additional 'logical core', or a hyperthread.

 

Only a radical difference in either clock speed or architecture (or both) will have a Core i5 beating a Core i7 CPU.

The reason I built my main system was initially for autocad and inventor, so I can definitely recommend either the i7-6700k or i7-7700k. You don't need a 6 core CPU. The 4 core 8 threads with hyper threading gives crazy good performance. But you are correct you will need a decent amount of RAM. I recommend 16GB minimum and 32GB if its in the budget. As far as graphics go you really don’t need much at all, my system has a GTX 960 4GB, I think the new GTX 1050 Ti’s are comparable. And that’s more than good enough. This being said you may want to wait for Ryzen to come out. AMD might take top spot for performance, and hopefully will be a bit more wallet friendly than Intel while doing so.

1. Not sure on a budget. He asked for a price and I didn't know for sure what he would need. Nothing absurd I would say.

2. 7700k has the best single core performance

3. Only for CAD and internet browsing

Thank you! This is what I was looking for! I assumed I would probably tell him to wait a little while until we at least knew what Ryzen would be capable of and pricing.

@Simonsez1337 I just quickly threw this together as a potential i7-7700k build, not sure on your budget but this is in CAD$: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/FV6fD8

So that has a big air cooler so you can overclock, a good Micro ATX board meaning you can have a smaller case, a good GTX 1050 Ti GPU, 2x8GB DDR4 RAM which is the minimum I'd recommend as cad uses lots of RAM (I have 2x16GB sticks in my build), a semi-modular 650W power supply for some future proofing if he would ever want a beefier GPU, and two 525GB SSD's that in raid 0 would be very reliable and fast (only a suggestion my system has my OS and program files on one 256GB SSD, with everything else on much cheaper hard drives)
