1440p or 4K UHD monitor ?

gawax

Hello everybody, I need to purchase a new monitor, the thing is, should I go for a 4K UHD, or a 1440p ?

What I need is a monitor under 400 dollars with a high color accuracy, preferably an IPS panel, a VESA mount, small response time (<5ms)., and with speakers.

I already had two in mind, but I'm not sure about their color accuracy and they had a TN panel. (AOC U2879VF, 4K UHD)  and (ASUS PB277Q, 1440p)

1440p all the way. Imo 4k is bad with scaling and hard to push. If you go for a 27'' or around that then its really great. I have been using one for a while if you look below, so if you have any questions feel free to ask :)

~ Main Rig ~

- Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Core 32 Threads - EVGA 3090 KINGPIN HYBRID - 32GB DDR4 3600mhz -

- 6TB SSD Array + 2TB MP600 NVME Gen4 Boot -

- Gigabyte X570 AORUS MASTER - Lian li O11 Dynamic XL - NZXT Kraken X73 + 16 Noctua NF-A12x25 Fans -

~ Accessories ~

- Logitech G915 + G903 - LG C9 OLED PG279Q 27'' [1440p 165hz G-Sync] +  PG27AQ27'' [4k 60hz G-Sync] -
2x 1440p Portrait 25'' Dell - DT 990 Pro Headphones -

~ Servers ~

- 100TB NAS + Server's w/ 6700k - 32 + 64GB Ram - NVME Boot - Gigabit Unlimited Fiber -

haha thanks, I'm wondering, if you stand, lets say about 50 cm away from the monitor, are the pixel visible to a point it is disturbing ?

Not really, I have a 25" 1440p screen myself and it look great unless I really stick my eyes at 10cm. It's more about text or thin elements not looking as sharp as they would on a 4K display with HiDPI scaling. But scaling is not handled very well in Windows right now.

A good test for "pixel visibility" is this calculator : https://www.sven.de/dpi/

Try some resolutions and sizes and look at the PPI value, and compare with what you see on various screens and what you find confortable. I found that I personally wasn't disturbed by pixels when the PPI value was above 100.

So for the 27" Asus that puts you at 108,79 PPI

I usually sit about 10cm away, can never see the pixels unless you go lower than that. And Imo the difference between 4k and this isnt worth it for the scaling issues. Not to mention if you intended to do any gaming 4k right now just isnt worth it unless you plan to spend stupid money on a sli setup
