Hello,

I'm setting up my first build on PCPartPicker, and for one of the versions of my build the estimated power requirement is 410 watts. Currently, I use a CX 500w on good ol' Bessey here that I'm posting this forum topic with, and was curious if I could reuse it for the new build. The rule that I had heard was use a PSU that has a wattage of 100 watts over the build estimate. However, I want to be absolutely sure; maybe less than that works.

Thanks.

That's what I was trying to avoid, though. I cannot afford another PSU. :/

The CX series aren't great PSU's, people always skimp on PSU's without realising that they are dicing with danger - they are usually wildly inefficient and put your system at risk when they give up. There are worse PSU's dont get me wrong

Well, then I guess I can't get my build. I don't want to break everything.

Power supply calculators always overestimate and are inaccurate.

Post a list of your specs so that people can know how much power you will ACTUALLY be using.

Granted, this is the OC version of the build:

-i5-7600k

-MSI Z270 PC MATE ATX LGA1151

-G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (2x8GB)

-PNY CS1311 480 GB SSD

-EVGA GTX 1070 8GB FTW

The Non-OC would be a 7600, instead.

EDIT: the 410 watt build (according to PCPartPicker) is the OC version; the non-OC version (again, according to PCPP) is 374 watts. So, if the CPU is overclocked, there are even more watts being used, and it becomes even more apparent that the 80 PLUS Bronze CX 500 is not a likely choice.

Dont use any wattage calculators. Your system most likely wont exceed 250W.

That said, the old cx500 is a very mediocre PSU and is known to be unreliable under stress (gaming, 24/7 server operation, etc...).

You'll be more than fine with 500W in that build

OK, but what about the fact that it is a 80 PLUS Bronze? It's still manageable even if I overclock it?

A mild overclock will be fine. As long as there's no major overvolting or anything like that.

That PC will likely use around 300W if you way heavily overclocked everything so 500W is fine, but the CX500 isn't the best PSU. It'll power it just fine but I'd avoid overclocking the GPU.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

All right, thank you. :) I'll probably end up getting a Cool Master V650 80 PLUS Gold later down the line.
