Hello all! I'm trying to get Total Anihilation (an old school rts that steam will only let me download on windows), running on a mac book pro. This is for my father-in-law so I'd like something quick, simple and won't negatively affect game play. Bonus points if you could help me out getting the game/emulator to run all with one Icon. The in-law is a bit older so the easier it is for him to play his favorite game, the better.

from a quick google, my guess is the game has both a windows and a mac version, and they only put the windows version on steam.

the alternative would be to buy it on a platform that ships the mac version, like gog.com

It's only $9.99 for both games on GOG

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Thanks for the quick google. I am aware of gog, the in law already has a steam account and is comfortable with the UI (he already has some games there and I've already purchased the steam key for Total Anihilation). My need still remains, an easy to use windows emulator that I can load steam/Total Anihilaiation through.

There aren't any "easy to use" windows emulators that would allow you to simply run a game. You'd have to install a virtual machine and install windows, unfortunately. If I were you, I'd contact the manufacturer of the game and say "hey, I bought the wrong version, can I have the mac version, here is my key."

That worked for me back in the day when Diablo II came out. I bought it retail in box and it only had the windows version on the disk. One quick call later, and I was downloading the mac version.

^ Agreed on half of above. For my knowledge WINE works for MacOS. I haven't used it in so much detail I would provide good support. But I did have games starting from single icon on Linux. Plus having Windows version of Steam running through it.

Easiest would still be getting GOG.com version. It will be single icon, since its only games they sell. The launcher is optional and is mostly for syncing savefiles.

I will admit that I haven't tried WINE probably for a decade. Back then it was not at all easy to get running, and barely supported anything. Sounds like it has changed.

I used it maybe 2 years ago. And only thing I didn't get working on Ubuntu was Battle.net/Hearthstone.
