Hello!

I am looking forward to host game servers.

What would be better between these two CPUs?

1st: Core™ i5-2300 (4c / 4t @ 2.8GHz+)

2nd: Core™ i7-920   (4c / 8t @ 2.66GHz)

Extra question: Would a i5-750 (4c / 4 @ 2.67GHz) be decent as well?

Could anybody explain the real difference between i5 / i7 especially about what impact it would have for the serveurs, if there is any.

Cheers

The i7 would be better if you were to host multiple servers off one CPU where for example, you'd be able to assign 1c/2t per server rather than 1c/1t per server :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

i7 uses hyper threading so would be useful for game hosting (I think it uses a lot of cpu horses), somebody quote me if i'm wrong xD

totally depends on what you want to run. how many VMs you plan to go for and what board you use. will this be professional or just for fun? energy consumption should be one of the main factors here too!

bottom line:

more details please

Planning on running RUST servers as far as now. It's mostly for fun but it is still gonna be managed seriously.

Gonna run Ubuntu on it and manage everything through console.

that i7 seem pretty old tho! Isn't the i5 better because of the fact it is more recent (less old)?

The i7 should still be better. I think you should put a bit more money into this because these processors won't be able to run servers a couple years from now.

Well, I can't really select another one. They are different packages. How comes the benchmarking ind. gives me higher points for the i5 2300 than the i7 920?

some server software really benefits from hyper-threading

take minecraft server for an example

because of how java works the game doesn't need to know if you have hyper-threading or not, C++ (what java is built apon) handles that stuff automatically without any extra coding or work

but, this only works in x86 mode, in x32 mode it can only use one core because of how x32 was designed in the first place

but it really comes down to what games you are running, some games like Far Cry 3 don't run at all unless you have hyper-threading (i think, it might be another version)

research what the requirements of the server software are and see if people have had better performance with something like hyper-threading

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

Been married to my wife for 3 years now! Yay!
