Gaming Chair vs Task Chair

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of refurnishing my office (house fire in the summer...) and I have an opportunity to invest in a good chair. Now I mostly game when I'm at my computer and the average session would be around 3 hours. That being said, I was 'all-in' on buying a DxRacer or equivalent chair but as I started looking around I was more attracted to proper office task chairs, both for comfort and the actual aesthetic. And not the costco brand faux leather $100 chair, but the proper ergonomic task chairs from companies like Herman Miller (Aeron/Mirra) and Steelcase (Leap/Think). I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see LTT do a review on some of these high end chairs and compare them against typical gaming chairs.

What do you guys think, have you had a chance to try any high end chairs as well as the gaming chairs out there, and how would you compare them? I was hoping to pick one up at the end of February and was hoping to find someone who's had a chance to try both kinds.

First off, sorry about your house fire. Secondly, in my honest opinion I really don't think it's worth getting a gaming chair. You're only sitting there for three hours and regular office chairs can be comfortable for that period of time. I just feel like it's a waste to spend 300-500$ on a chair with just a few more features that aren't really that important. This is just my opinion.

EDIT: I have a regular office chair that I bought from Office Depot 3 years ago and I don't even get uncomfortable, yeah a little more cushion could be nice but I game for maybe 6+ hours on weekends and maybe 2-4 on days I have classes and I don't feel uncomfortable at all.

i have the mirra 2 and a racing chair in my office at work - perks of having an uncontrolled budget (as in it's not already spent for me)- the racing chair conforms to your body more and doesn't jut out at weird places. but looks out of place in an office - the mirra 2 feels really nice although it is just some mesh/plastic, it's ergonomic and doesn't make you sleepy - the dx racer is something i use when i like more comfort than usual - eg long programming sessions, the mirra is just for everything else, haven't experienced any back pains with either - definitely recommend the mirra 2 though, great aesthetic, feels great,

Gaming chairs are a gimmick, and often have subpar build quality for comparable office chairs.

Get a proper office chair and it'll treat you right in both longevity and proper support for years to come.

Because let's be real. Gaming chairs are just slightly modified sport seats from cars.

I think this is the base of my problems. I have some back issues and after a few hours in a regular office chair, I'm in pretty rough shape.

Would a high-back chair help you out?

Possibly. I think proper lumbar support and arm rests are actually what would make the most difference. And a good fitting chair in general. I need to support these elderly gaming bones of mine.....

oh ur canadian too, good luck trying to find a mirra 2 at a seller in canada, have to buy from the online shop, the mirra 2 is good for back pain, but the gesture from steelcase seems to have a very arched out back - considered it for a bit

How about this? It's not a gaming chair and it does look pretty nice.

The concept of dropping a GPU sized (or more ram, or a bunch of new HDD's or SSD's, or more monitors, or better cooling, or a mic) amount of money ON A CHAIR makes me gag; I've sat in the same discount office supply chair chair eight-16 hours a day for most of my life, and I still have better posture than most people.

Not to start some massive poo-throwing fight, just a thought.

I agree when it comes to "gaming" chairs. Proper high-end office chairs though are a different ballgame entirely when it comes to comfort, build quality and ergonomics.

I bought a DKRacer replica off Ebay for $89. Its cheap but worth the money. Has a foot rest that slides out too for when watching movies.
