I have a friend who is a content creator. He is thinking about building a second computer solely for editing so he can focus more. (different room, different mindset). I told him I could help him put one together. The only question i have is, if this computer is only gonna be for video editing, does it need a GPU. I don't know a whole lot about editing software and its demands. He uses Sony Vegas.

A GPU does help with editing, Intel GPUs support quick sync which is utilized by a lot of video editing software but the intergrated GPUs in the Intel chips tend to be a bit weak, I have used AMD and Nvida GPUs with Adobe Premier and they make editing and rendering a lot faster and they tend to not be too different in terms of which brand has better performance in Adobe. I don't know how well they will work in Sony Vegas but I can assume they will work just as well and anything that's not slower then a RX 460 or GTX 1050 will work.

Vegas does apparently support gpu accelerated rendering.

Performance seems dependent on what codec you render out as. The article above seems to point to AMD having slightly (and I mean slightly) better performance because of better OpenCL support as oppose to Nvidia preferring the renderer to use Cuda.

Most all ediitn gsoftware these days uses opencl or cuda. Very little software uses quicksync becuase the quality sucks.  In premiere you can normally get 200% faster renders with a gpu, depends on the exact effects and resolution.

Yah like I said the Intel iGPUs don't have very good graphics built in and are not very good compared to a proper AMD or Nvidia GPU

an 8GB RX 480 most likely

Vegas natively supports OpenCL last I checked so probably go with AMD

this is for Vegas Pro 12, a clear win, not sure on adding in CUDA support or something

but also as you can see a high end card doesn't exactly help with rendering, like it doesn't scale linearly at all, just having a GPU is most important

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Pick up a first generation GTX Titan or GTX 780ti, they're incredibly cheap and have a ridiculous number of CUDA cores which will absolutely blow through renders in Adobe Premiere. Being someone who edits in that program I wish it took more advantage of my 32 processing threads, but more CUDA cores is always the way to go with premiere.

Dude 32 cores, 64GB of RAM, but only a 1060???

lol, I know- I hate my life. The 1060 is perfectly fine though for my 1080p gaming, I plan on picking up a first gen titan or 780ti (like I recommended) to assist my PC in rendering in premiere.

No no no. Get a Titan Z. Ive seen some for $500 or less which is the price of a titan.

Then send me your 1060 so I can have 3 GPU's

I've rendered a 30 minute video in 20 minutes with a 780ti classified and I found one for pretty cheap
