Why are webpages taking relatively long to load?

Wierzbak

Hey, can somone explain me like I'm five, why are webpages taking relatively so long to load? Like some pages (and I mean legit, big websites) can take even 4-5 seconds to load? How much do they weigh? I'm rolling around 600-700 Mbps fiber connection, and I'd expect surfing the web to be similar experience as browsing files on a SSD.

It could depend on what browser you use. I personally found that Chrome tends to have the best luck when it comes to massive amounts of data rolling through.

That's what I'm using. And if not for the sychronization and other stuff I use, I would jump to any other browser, even Edge. Chrome tends to freeze and crash with ~10 tabs open (most of it is YT) and then searching through video. Or when refreshing facebook. Or when doing pretty much anything a bit more intensive. It drives me nuts lately.

As much sour taste as this comment will get, Microsoft's Edge is supposed to be much faster than both Chrome, and Firefox.

you do know with Trump becoming President the isp's are going to have their way and net neutrality will be no more if the new administration gets away with it. that means throttling by the isp's in hopes of making people pay more for something they already had............. and the slow ups are a precursor.

I've got one question for you, are you running IPv6? If so, I can tell you that by default IPv6 web pages will take slightly longer to load due to the security and other overhead associated with the protocol that IPv4 doesn't have built in.

How do I check this? I'm a complete moron when it comes to networking, I'm more of a hardware guy :P

If you go to http://test-ipv6.com/

it will tell you if you can do IPv6 and what the default is for you (IPv4 or IPv6)

Your IPv6 address on the public Internet appears to be 2001:0:5ef5:79fd:38ed:3913:6901:4026
Your IPv6 service appears to be: Teredo

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) appears to be POZMAN POZMAN-EDU, PL

knob_valid_green.png

Good news! Your current configuration will continue to work as web sites enable IPv6.

knob_info.png

You appear to be able to browse the IPv4 Internet only. You will not be able to reach IPv6-only sites.

knob_info.png

Your IPv6 connection appears to be using Teredo, a type of IPv4/IPv6 gateway; currently it connects only to direct IP's. Your browser will not be able to go to IPv6 sites by name. This means the current configuration is not useful for browsing IPv6 web sites. [more info]

knob_valid_green.png

Your DNS server (possibly run by your ISP) appears to have IPv6 Internet access.

What does it mean?

It means you have IPv6 enabled and are using it by default, which is expected.

If you go to Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings (on the left hand side) > Right click on the Network Adapter > Click on Properties > (at this point you should see Internet and Internet) > Click Properties at the bottom  > Uncheck the box next to 'Internet Protocol Version 6' > Try to browse to a different page you haven't gone to before and let me know the results.

I did it, it looks like pages are loading a bit faster now, but I'm not sure if that's not just a placebo :P

Yah, lets try this.

Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig /flushdns

Then try to browse to a site and see. That will flush all the DNS entries on the computer and make the computer request the addresses again, fresh, so we'll know for sure.

You could try changing your DNS server, sometimes the ISP ones are not so good, so more and more people now use google or openDNS servers. Go to your router's webadmin page and look for "internet" settings, then find the part that says Domain Name Server and change the setting to either 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for google's or use 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 for openDNS. Click apply and you're done.

If you're not fluent with this stuff, make sure to backup your settings in case of mistakes.

Sadly I don't have access to router. I live in a dorm, and plug my computer "to the wall". Router is somewhere in the basement I guess :D Also, I can sometimes play music on sombody's computer through spotify, as we are all connected to the same network :D

Ahh I see, in that case you can "force" the DNS addresses by in your computer going to network and sharing center (right click network icon)

Click on your adapter (in blue), a new window will open.

click on "properties", new window will open.

"select" - don't un-tick, where it says "internet protocol version 4" and again click "properties"

Click on the little round button where it says "use the following DNS server addresses" and enter the info I gave you previously., then click OK. Then you can close the other windows and you're done.

You can test what you're using on the same window we first opened up "status window" after we clicked blue highlighted text, by clicking the "details" button.
