URGENT AUDIO PROBLEM

Hello everybody,

I've tried to plug my mic into my guitar amp, and then to a laptop to try to distort it. But then my laptop started doing these horrible noises (video down below) and the only thing that worked EVEN TO MAKE IT SHUT UP was to completely disable my drivers. EVEN WITH THE VOLUME AT 0 IT STILL MADE THIS HELLISH NOISE. I am fucking desperate. Did I break its speakers or just fucked up the software. I tried reinstalling the drivers btw.

Photo pretty much shows, but ill explain: mic has two ports,USB for power and data, and headphone for momitoring. In plugged the monitoring port into the input on the amp. Then i plugged tbe amp headphone jack into the PC

Now I'm confused even more.

What are you trying to accomplish, and can you please explain what is plugged into what without any typos?

Sorry for the typos, I am writing this from a phone. Alright. What I tried to do was to connect my mic to my guitar amp, so that I can try to use the distortion button. Why? I thought it could be funny. Anyway. My amp has two ports. One for input, and the other for the headphones (output). I Firstly connected my mic to my laptop using USB for power. Then connected the second port on the mic, which is a monitoring one (output) to the input port of the amp. Then connected the output (headphone) port of my amp to my headphone/mic combo jack of my laptop.

If you wanted to do distortion on your vocals, you can just use a distortion effect in your recording software... or just crank the gain on it if you're really desperate. An electric guitar output signal is different than a microphone, especially your little USB powered one. Without a preamp, your mic probably wasn't powerful enough to send a signal to be amplified. I doubt you fried anything, just a poor setup.

Just checking.

  1. Mic USB --> Computer USB port
  2. Mic audio --> Amp input.
  3. Amp output --> Computer headphone/mic combo jack.

Shouldn't fry an audio chipset. The 'Hellish Screaming' you mentioned sounds like feedback. Restart and see if that helps.

Then what can i do to fix it? I tried restarting and reinstalling driver but I got no result.

Correct. Restarting did nothing though.

Do you have an external USB audio device? A USB headset will work, and an audio interface will be even better. They don't use the system's onboard audio, and also have their own drivers.

If I plug my samsung headphones in, It stops....kinda? The hellish sound is replaced with loud hissing that sometimes stops. Still can't hear anything in the headphones though.

I said USB headset or an audio interface, didn't I?. If you use the combo jack, you're still using the onboard audio of your computer, which you've probably fried by overloading it; either with amplifier static due to a loose connection or just feedback.

I don't have any audio devices that use USB. :(

Buy one. Easiest way to test if you've ruined your audio chipset.

What about Bluetooth? Bluetooth audio might work too. Got a Bluetooth headset somewhere?

OKAY. I plugged the laptops' HDMI output to my monitor, selected the monitors audio, and connected sone speakers to it ( the monitor not the laptop) . Still, the laptop didn't careand made its horrible sounds through its speakers, while the ones I connected didn't do anything.

I think HDMI Audio uses the same audio circuits as the headphone/microphone combo jacks.

@SSL- Any ideas on what he can do?

Basic troubleshooting steps, maybe? How's that for a plan?

  • Uninstall drivers and disable the audio input and output in Device Manager.
  • Completely power off the machine, take out the batter if possible and leave it for a few minutes.

If that doesn't work, the onboard audio was probably damaged by having a high-level headphone output plugged into it's line-in or mic-in.

- Tried reinstalling drivers, did nothing

- Took battery and soundcard out,put them back in, nothing.

Okay, update:

I plugged an HDD with a copy of Windows 7 instead of my w10. It booted in system recovery, bluescreened for a milisecond, and tried restaring. While restarting, the message Realtek blah blah blah, media test failure.

I think we can conclude that you broke your soundcard. Lesson learned, hopefully.

Lesson learned? Yes.

Can I fix it somehow though? I tried looking online for internal y50 soundcards, but found nothing, an warranty expired (not that I think that someone will repair this laptop because I was dumb enough put plug random shit it.)

How good are you at following traces on a PCB? How good are you at SMD soldering? Can you find the *exact* components used in your laptop, and replace them using the aforementioned skills? If the answer to any of these questions is no, then you're SOL as far as DIYing a solution.

You could take it to a computer repair shop and see if they'd be willing to replace it, but honestly, the easiest way to get around this (and probably the cheapest - labor is not cheap) would be to get an external DAC/amp thing. Something like Schiit Fulla 2, or, if you want something smaller, the Dragonfly from audioquest (or the much cheaper version from fiio - though the name of that one escapes me at the moment.)

Note: none of those will have a mic input. You could also grab something like the hyperX cloud 2 and use the USB thing that's included with those, though by all reports, it's a piece of crap.

Though it is unfortunate that this happened, I do want to thank you - This is actually a very interesting issue that you've created here; one that I haven't seen before. And considering that most questions around here are the same exact ones day in and day out, thanks!

Hey! New SIgnature!

I'm supposedly a person on the Internet, but you'll never know if I'm human or not ;)

Following traces? Heha! Can't even fix an old powerbank.

Soldering? I tried to take some stuff off a laptop motherboard. No luck, though I did manage to solder a pair of earbuds! :D

I cannot find the components. Seriously, nobody sells Lenovo Y50 parts on eBay or AliExpress!

But seriously, I'll try to repair this thing as hard as I can, it has some sentimental value, plus I just got an SSD for it.

Thanks for the help everybody. :)
