Motherboard or CPU?

I built  my first pc with little to no issues but it recently broke down my question is how can I tell if it's my motherboard that's broken or my CPU?

most of the time it is the mobo who breaks, so i'd crack that down. just trouble-shoot

P9x79 deluxe asus motherboard gtx 970

16gb  of ballistic ram 

lag 2011 i7 6 cores 

a 1 tb hard drive

My issues are it won't post. I will press the power button  and nothing happens

Try disconnecting everything but RAM and CPU. If you don't get anything, verify that PSU is working (unplug from PC and try starting it by itself). If PSU works, sadly only ways to check CPU and mobo is to test them with known to work CPU/mobo. If your mobo has LED for error codes, those would tell if RAM or CPU has issues.

 

Just from not starting I would check PSU first.

Ok I unplugged everything and ( but the ram and cpu) nothing changed. I know the psu is working because my first one was under warranty and Inwas able to get a new one nothing changed. I'm going to take it to a place with a workbench so I can find out what is wrong thank you for the help.
