5960X overclocks higher but 6900K has a bit more IPC. In the end they're about the same performance so grab the cheaper of the two.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

6900K it's clocked higher than a 5960x with the same amount of cores, it's built on 14nm instead of 22nm like the 5960x and it supports up to 128GB over the 64GB from a 5960X. 6900k also supports RAM higher than 2133mhz. RAM speed can really come in handy when video editing.

Pretty even. 6900k benefits from the process shrink, but can't overclock as hard.

5960x overclocks like a beast. but is an older chip.

Price is pretty similar.

and they both benefit from water cooling. They're very hot processors.

Doesn't matter, both are faster than high-end Ryzen :) . With that, the 6900k seems like a better choice just by looking at the ARK page.

We haven't even saw how fast those Ryzen CPUs acctually are.

They could overclock to 5GHz and would be the same or even faster than 6900k.

I wouldn't judge AMD before we get any more details. And at this point it's better to wait with buying CPU for 1 or 2 months, just so we can see what Ryzen will acctually offer.

It's possible that top tier of Ryzen will be 10% slower than i7 6900k, but it will cost 30% less. So that would be still a great deal and much better price to performance ratio.

We simply don't know anything about Ryzen right now.

If the price difference isn't much, grab the 6900K. The performance gains over the 5960X are almost negligible, but if the price is right why not get the newer generation chip?

@Ophidio The 5xxx series all support 128gb of ram and over 2133mhz just fine, by the way.

The 5960x overclocks a great deal higher than the 6900k.  When both are pushed to their max, the 5960x is capable of more output.

The 5960x and 6900k both support 128 GB or RAM and both support RAM faster than 2133.  I run 64GB 3200 c14 with my 5960x and it runs perfectly.  3200 is considered the sweet spot for RAM on the x99 platform.

If you plan to spend the majority of your time at stock clocks, go with the 6900k as it is better in its stock form.  If you plan on overclocking, go with the 5960x.

Yeah, sure, though I disagree with literally all of that, but at least with the 6900k you know there's going to be another chip on the socket if you ever look to upgrade. AMD could go bankrupt or choose to sell its IP next year.

Yeah that's true, but if they will realy offer performance of i7 6900k at lower price ... I might go for it. 8 cores with "hypethreading" should be more than enough CPU power for next few years.

And if it will be that good, I'm sure people will start buying AMD once again and they will get more profit ---> hence more money for future development.

I'm realy interested how that's going to play out.
