yup usually it is but it really depends on the person, when i first built my htpc it was really easy.  also https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/j3vzHN get a 6700 if you can spend a bit more.

Hi, I'm hoping to build my first PC soon and was looking for some help.

The criteria I'm looking for :

  • Run Lightroom and Photoshop very well (this is one of the main reasons for the upgrade)
  • Be relatively future-proof, though I realise there's a few components ill have to upgrade eventually
  • Run games at 1080p with a playable frame rate, I'm not looking at current AAA titles but I hope to run most pre-2016 games well
  • Limited desk space so quite small
  • Only needs to look basic, I don't want any side windows or RGB
  • It doesn't have to be quiet, as long as it isn't unusually loud

This is my current parts list:

  • Core i5-7500 (£195.99)
    • I've read that Lightroom is reliant mostly on single cores so I went for a good speed, I originally had the skylake equivalent but this was only £6 more on amazon
  • Stock cooler
    • I won't be overclocking so I assume this is fine?
  • Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H DDR3 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£46.90)
    • I think this has everything I need including support for more RAM if I ever need it, is being restricted to DDR3 an issue?
  • Crucial Ballistix Tactical 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£85.51)
  • PNY CS1311 120GB SSD (£39.47) or Intel 600p Series 128GB M.2-2280 SSD (£51.92)
    • I'll definitely have Windows and my core programs on an SSD but I'm not too bothered about files, will 120GB be enough?
    • SATA or M.2, is it worth the extra? read/write speeds don't seem to be much higher at these small capacities
  • Toshiba P300 2TB HDD (£62.99)
  • Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB (£139.98)
    • Seems to have good specs for the price but I'm unsure if its enough
  • Fractal Design Core 1100 MicroATX Case (£36.95)
    • Cheap, small and looks good but will cable management be a problem? it wont have to look good inside
  • Corsair CXM 450W 80+ Bronze Semi-Modular ATX PSU (£52.73)
    • Enough power? Too much?
  • Cheap optical drive (£13.61)

The whole thing comes to £683.28, I'd rather not spend much more than this

Here's the part picker link:

If there's anything I can improve or should change I'd love your feedback, thanks :)

Issue with buying a kaby lake processor with a skylake motherboard.

If the motherboard doesn't ALREADY have have the latest BIOS that supports kaby lake, you may need to buy a skylake processor to do the bios update before your system woold work with the kaby lake.

Cheers, did you go for a lesser CPU and less RAM so that the 480 fit in my budget or was it overkill to start with?

what do you mean by a lesser cpu and less ram your pc build wouldn't work, ddr3 paired with kabylake platform that's a joke. this would work https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/syFcyf kabylake is not worth the money for what you are doing, you can't update the bios with a usb on a cheap motherboard like that.

If you don't mind going even smaller you can always use a mini itx which is a smaller form factor that can fit in smaller cases while still being able to fit any gpu

Yeah I get the incompatibility issues and thanks for fixing that up, but I noticed you swapped the 7500 for the 6400, instead of the 6500, is that you saying that it was more than I needed? I went with kaby lake because it was only a tiny bit more expensive but it doesn't seem worth the incompatibilities, so skylake it is
