I'm currently on the hunt for a decent pair of Headphones, not a headset because I use a CO1U microphone, I want to use these for gaming so I'm looking for a pair that pick up positional audio really well but aren't going to cost me a fortune. Any ideas? I'm more than willing to read a view reviews if you have multiple options :)

Plantronics 380 or steelseries sibra v2 (if you must have a headset, otherwise, get headphones and a clip on mic)

2.0 is positional, if you didn't notice (at least in games which are designed to have positional audio, which is most these days).

Don't need virtual 7.1 nonsence.  Leave the audio alone.  Don't even bother with a proper surround headset, not worth it, audio suffers due to having to have smaller drivers in the ear cups.

If you want surround get a surround SYSTEM, not a headset.

I have heard of virtual 7.1 being nonsense before, probably from a Linus video. As long as I can hear where someone is or something is happening in game and not have to spend a lot of money I'll be a happy man, at the moment I'm using sennheiser HD201 and it sounds like everything is going on right in my face.

I can hear where people in BF3 just fine with my cheapo 380's.

You should be able with your 201's also, so dunno whats going on there.

Try http://www.razerzone.com/gb-en/surround

That's basically what you get with virtual surround from any headset.

It works, but the audio suffers.

Woops, just noticed you said headphones not headset...doh lol

Get one of these: http://linustechtips.com/main/uploads/monthly_09_2013/post-7799-0-05328100-1378325794.png

and use the razer surround software if 2.0 isn't enough for your positional needs.

I've previously tried that and found that it just made my sound lower, I thought it could be just the way I adjusted the settings so I had a friend also try and we both had the same outcome with these headphones.

That sounds like just a problem with those specific headphones, since the software DOES work, very well for what virtual 7.1 can do at least.

I've only heard good things about Razer Surround so I don't doubt that it works, unfortunately just not for me.

Another question I have sort of involves soundcards, I don't have one and currently use onboard sound so I was curious about some of the gaming headsets that have a USB audio processor like the ASUS Orion pros are they just a sales gimmick or do they work?

I suggest the Pioneer-SE-A1000 and they're a bit underbudget if you want to know why ask ShearMe or MayflowerElectronics as I have seen them recommend these multiples times for gaming in that price range.

If the headphones aren't being driven well enough by your onboard audio then you could get an amp/dac but these are 45ohm and may or may not need more power... they will work but they may not be as good/loud as you'd get with an amplifier

Shoulda asked the audio subforum for headphones broski! Headsets belong in Peripherals.  B)

For gaming it's nice to have open headphones. Sennheiser HD 518 and AKG K240 are both in your budget.

Max budget in the UK, but still a good choice.

HD555/558 or AD700/AD700x I don't know the prices and availability in your country, but the lowest I'd go for headphones (You are sacrificing wide sound stage which gives you positional audio in games) will be some JVC HARX700 or Incipio Nx-100 f38. For somewhere in-between the AKG K240 Studio
