No... This is not true. On SSDs you just have to erase the data and it's impossible to retrieve it as long as you're using an operating system that supports TRIM and the SSD support TRIM too. Whoever this is from your school has no idea what they're talking about.

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

You can use secure erase software to completely clear an SSD, in regular use they don't delete their data they just remove the pointer files and when new data is added writes over the old stuff, meaning if you just reformat a drive you can potentially recover all the data from it since it's just had the pointer files removed.

Isn't that not necessary as long as TRIM is supported, or am I wrong?

if its a new ssd just use it, you won't have any problem. getting back deleted data from fat 32 is not a easy task, unless someone is determined to get your data its not easy thing to do.

due to the way the ssds do wear leveling, you can write over a file, and the old file will still be there as its using different blocks

Its pretty easy to get data back, but depends on what happens.

Not too sure actually I was always under the impression that it did that to prevent excessive writes on the flash, but if TRIM just clears it then that data at that point would be close to irrecoverable.

TRIM will only clear sufficiently large segments. I believe most use 256KB-2MB blocks. Once TRIM sees the block is [fully] marked, the block is deleted and reused.
