WD Reds are not really any more expensive than normal drives (or other brand alternatives)

Your data is worth the expense

any hard drive SHOULD work fine in a NAS. The nas rated ones are just recommended because they are designed for 24/7 operation and have generally better thermal performance.

Just don't put any WD Greens (or any other "low power" drive) and you should be good to go. Keep in mind though that a lot of NAS manufacturers have a list of "approved drives" and wont provide you with any support if you use drives not on the list.

When in doubt, re-format.

How much do you storage do you need? Also, dont forget to factor in a budget for back ups if its important data.

You are right, about $15 to $20 dollars more. They use to cost lots more, the last time I checked.
