Can you use a I5 6600K on a Z270 motherboard?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

Yes you can. Any Kaby Lake motherboard is backward compatible with Skylake

As i am building a new rig and kabylake and the new and improved motherboards are out i was wondering if you could use a 6600K with a Z270 motherboard?

Unless you use Kabylake, you can't take advantage of the extra features...

The only reason to get a Z270 board over a Z170 (except for RGB LEDs) is Intel's Optane, which Skylake doesn't support...

Well, there's AVX Offset and a few other things besides Intel Optane alone, but yeah, they all require Kaby Lake in order to use.  :D

  • 1 month later...

i ordered a asrock z270m pro4 because it has 2x M.2 and more pice lanes on the chipset. i plan on using it with my 6600k for gaming and 2x NVME drives and i was worried that z170 wouldn't have enough lanes for my 1080, 2 NVME M.2, and (hopefully soon) a faster internet connection.

could i have done all that with z170? and could i add, say, another NVME sad in a x16 slot?

the z270 chipset has 4 more pice lanes, that alone should be worth it for a $115 mobo.

My reason was that Skylake was a lot cheaper than Kaby, and the z270 mobo i wanted was cheaper than the similar z170 line up (prettier too). So i saved some money, and i didn't take a performance hit...
