Extend desktop to virtual / fake monitor?

Hello all.

New to the forums but long-time subscriber.

So I have a 1440x900 monitor and I do some video game capturing from time to time of replays. I'm wondering if it's possible to increase the resolution that I'm capturing to WQHD, 4K, etc using my same setup without having to fork out on a 4K resolution monitor. I tried a virtual machine where you can emulate the monitor to any restitution and this worked however the directx support ended up constantly crashing the application so it's not practical.

I'm now looking for a way within Windows 7 though I couldn't come up with anything yet. One idea is to extend the desktop in windows 7 to a second, "fake" monitor with the desired resolution. I would then drag the application left / right into the extended, faked monitor, maximize it from the keyboard and start recording via a hotkey.

Wondering if anyone has any insight into if it's possible? I saw the following thread which guys use to get more out of SLI / xfire configurations for folding use but I'm not sure if it'll work or not: http://www.overclock.net/t/384733/the-30-second-dummy-plug

Many thanks.

You wanna show your friends you have a 4k monitor?

Why do you want to do this?

It's best to run your monitor at its native resolution.

If you want more space to work, less clutter.

Try Dexpot. http://dexpot.de/

haven't looked into it on this, but on my TV I use a DVI to VGA adapter and my HDMI cable so that windows thinks I'm using 2 monitors and then just switch between them, one for work, one for play.

oh you want 4k, nvm

I'm wondering if you have the appropriate hardware to even run the games etc at 4K. I don't know of any solution to your problem but it wouldn't surprise me if there was one, just remember that if you have want to render at 4K resolution you have to have the hardware to back it up. It's also kind of pointless seeing as no one actually has 4K monitors to watch your content in 4K.

I'm gonna go ahead and say no.

You need a 4k monitor to view the footage that you record.

There's really no point in recording a higher res vid when you can't watch it.

There are ways to upscale, but it's not worth it. You might even see a loss in quality.

I'm still not sure what you want to do with the resulting video.

You were wrong. I managed to do it in the end.
