AM4 Socket Compatibility

I am planning a platform upgrade and the one of things stopping from making up my mind is the socket compatibility with older coolers. I thought the AM4 socket was a carbon copy of AM3 complete with plastic retention clips things, so older coolers use a backplate (removing the plastic clips) should still fit right?

 

I'm allowing about $500-550USD for the upgrade and and i really don't want to have to throw a new cooler in there along with a new motherboard,CPU,RAM.

Current: R2600X@4.0GHz\\ Corsair Air 280x \\ RTX 2070 \\ 16GB DDR3 2666 \\ 1KW EVGA Supernova\\ Asus B450 TUF

Old Systems: A6 5200 APU -- A10 7800K + HD6670 -- FX 9370 + 2X R9 290 -- G3258 + R9 280 -- 4690K + RX480

No, AM4 is a different socket and mounting size from AM3 and older sockets.

Different bracket will be needed for AM4.

 

It has more pins so they've had to make the size a little bigger, making the mounting holes further apart. (Or something similar to that, was mentioned in a recent LTT video i think)

They have been using the same mounting since socket 939. How can they be assholes? Some fans let you just buy the bracket accessory without the need to change the entire cooler.

I'm sure most cooler manufacturers will have the updated mounting hardware for AM4.


They're not really assholes for updating, AMD has needed to do it for some time. 
I'm sure when Intel switch from what they were using before to what they used now plenty of people weren't happy.

Most cooler companies (Cooler master,NZXT, Noctua, EKWB) have already all released info about bracket for existing coolers.
