Help finding a Linux distro

Go to solution Solved by tlink,

linux mint will be fine unless you want to do more than just gaming.

I am currently building computer for gaming and do not want to use/buy windows. I am not sure what distro I want to use. I am thinking about Linux Mint. Is there anything else you can recommend that I should consider?

Linux Mint is pretty much the go-to now for easy mode Linux. You could also try Elementary (but it's in a "beta" stage) or Lubuntu.

Thanks. I was leaning towards Mint. You confirmed my opinion.

I know it was already answered but linux mint is great for gaming. You can use both linux games and WINE to play windows apps and games.

Does WINE emulate a windows enviroment or does it do other magic?

It is not a full emulator but it adds compatibility for all windows executables/binaries and is completely free. Just launch the exe with WINE and it should load correctly. But dont try using a purely windows program that requires sys 32 and such because that will fail loading.

Oh I thought it was like I just don't wanna pay for Windows type of thing so I thought that you would want it free from microsoft but yeah.

Sorry, more like don't want to pay and don't want the issuse with insider builds. Those are like betas right? Plus I so not really care for windows 10.

"I want a new machine for a typical Windows task (gaming) but I don't want to use Windows because of (probably lame) reasons I won't tell you. I'll simulate a Windows layer instead, accepting all restrictions in terms of performance and driver compatibility."

Yeah, sounds great and not even slightly stupid.

I'm a fan of Linux Mint. I've found it a great all-rounder. If you want to dip into lower level stuff, but don't want to go all the way to Gentoo, Arch or Angergos might be fun. (But you need to enjoy tinkering with low level stuff.)

The most low level stuff I have done thus far is with a really messed up centOS install. (Brother wanted Minecraft on it, that install lacked graphics drivers and java)  I am looking forward to applying that to other OSes
