Why do you even need to upgrade? Im still using a 560Ti, (older but still destroys everything anyway). If your 650 can run current games then why upgrade now? Save up and get the latest coolest most powerful thing out when you actually cant play games anymore. Thats what im planning to do.

Wait until the non-reference 290x's start rolling out, hopefully they will deal with temps. If you're impatient, buy a 780 now unless you really want to pay an extra $100 for extra performance, that I don't believe, will be that much different from the 780.

Hey well yea. I mean if you got a 780Ti and use the 650 for Physx...or are they the same GPU?  ¯\(°_o)/¯

Not worth using dedicated PhysX here. The 780 Ti would do it better.

I mean like buy another 650 ti or would that be pointless

It's not worth sli'ing the 650 Ti BOOST.

I would use your card until the non reference 290xs come out then make your decision if you can get a 780/290x  you should really get them instead of a second card because i am sure that a 780/290x would beat 2 650ti boosts in sli

Never wait. When the hardware you're waiting for comes out, new and better hardware will be announced.

Example: people waited for the 290X. Suddenly, the 780Ti was " "leaked" ". You can play the waiting game to infinity and beyond.

Spoiler

290x is still heck of a deal tho. the only thing left to be announced is MAxwell from Nvidia. which is later.

And by then AMD will come up with something else, like a revision for Hawaii or a dual 290x card (290X2 :P ), and then we will have maybe 6 months left unti Volta is announced and so on and on...

If you are gaming at 1440p or less resolution then go ahead and get the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 because it will perform better than the 290x. If you are gaming at higher resolutions than that or on triple or more monitors then get the AMD Radeon R9 290X because it will perform better with that setup.

I still have my GTX 560 working with me and still plays Battlefield 4 at medium - high settings at a decent 55 - 65fps. I'm waiting for the GTX 8xx series to upgrade. I'd wait for those if I were you.

It'll be out Q1 2014... 2 - 3 months wait :D

Unless the technology has some major feature that cannot be enabled or used on currently available products then I don't wait.  If you wait you may as well keep waiting because there will always be a better product just around the corner.  I usually buy products that are one generation behind the latest as all the kinks are generally worked out by then.

So I am building a new computer and i am wondering if i should wait and use my GTX 650 ti boost until the non reference 290x or the 780 ti arrives or just buy the 780/290x now. Any ideas?

I'm actually very tempted to wait for the GTX 800 series, apparently it's coming early Q1 of next year.
