A warning to anyone considering the Maximus VII Hero

This board is the worst purchase i have ever made in my life. I have had countless problems with it. Good luck getting anything from asus support, as they are essentially useless. That also goes for the drivers. Every version of AI Suite sucks BEYOND BELIEF. These are some of the worst drivers that i have ever had the horrible pain of dealing with in my life. The board also sometimes just decides that it doesnt want to let your pc boot. It will sit on the ROG logo for an infinite amount of time. I have tried everything in my power to fix this. I have unplugged the drive ad booted into the bios, someone said that this fixes it. They forgot to mention that after about 6 boots the fix doesnt work anymore. The board is an absolute pain in the ass to deal with if it is ever disconnected from the wall for more than 24 hours. 

 

Again, this board is not worth buying. I can easily see why it was discontinued as people were tied of paying $200 for a piece of crap. I will never buy another Asus board again and you shouldn't either.

 

Pros: looks cool

Cons: pretty much everything besides the BIOS UI

 

 

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

Just keeping this here as a I have a VIII Hero and it works fine. The only noticible things with it are that: after disconnecting power and reconnecting after all led's were off, the motherboard waits on the rog logo for about 15 secs instead of the usual 3 with my ssd.

Well, you had problems, that does not makes Asus mobos bad. They are good, one of the best. 

I had problems with an gigabyte gpu, it was clearly a manufacturing error, but i ended up being fucked. That makes gigabyte bad? No, but im damn sure never buying anything from them again.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

All boards will have their defects, looks like you might have gotten a faulty board. Updating the bios mostly fixes it and it's discontinued because it's old. Not cause it's crap.

I have been using an ASUS Maximus VII Hero paired with my i5-4690K since early 2015 -- no issues so far.

Currently sitting on a 4.7 GHz overclock with 1.23V, on a NZXT X61.

 

There is one mistake you did (IMO) -- using Windows-based software to deal with all your overclocking and tweaking -- AI Suite.

THIS is why people, including us here at LTT, recommend tweaking your settings directly through the BIOS.

 

I have never touched AI Suite with the THREE ROG boards I have used -- Crosshair IV Formula, Crosshair V Formula, Maximus VII Hero.

The same goes for all of the Gigabyte or MSi motherboards I have used for other people's custom builds -- no Gigabyte EasyTune, no MSi Command Centre.

All through the tried-and-trued  BIOS.

Actually I only bought asus boards. They make the best ones.

Bought my maximus used and I quite like it. Software is also much better then the suites on my other boards.

The cpu is still weak as shit but it was a great purchase.

I don't buy products based off customer service as I don't break my stuff and tend to know how to trouble shoot.

still using my hero 6, gene 6 and hero 7 boards with no issues, quirks or AI3 suite issues. as well as 97-a and 99-a.

in the past my RIVE (typical bad audio) and MIVE-Z (my fault dropping a delidded CPU) needed RMA and had the systems down 6 and 8-days respective. no issues with their contact or quality.

 

i won't buy MSI or Giggy boards due to their inoperable BIOS/UEFI (over-voltage applies, memory handling, software controls), CS to repair the soft/hardware, but i don't tell other not to buy them as like me my ASUS purchases all have great usage, to where others with MSI or Giggy have similar success.

we'd had one member bashing their hero 7 for coil whine, 3 RMAs and still the whine, swapped to a Giggy board and somehow that whine was still there.. tested the GPU and PSU and knew it was the mobo and well.. it wasn't.

 

if you have an open support ticket with ASUS, it can be escalated and has a paper trail of the contact. usually, no contact after your initial should alert them to an issue.using the chat relay is not customer service.

 

if the system boots sometimes, then it sounds like more of a hardware/setup issue for POST. hanging POST usually indicates a device is not ready to function on POST and is making the timeout period inconsistent. HDD and network settings can present hanging POST. some USB devices (mouse keyboard, USB devices/drives) can also register, but not allow a complete POST.

 

sorry to hear of your dilemma, maybe another manufacturer can do better or.. not.
