No. They are different sockets. Put the i5 back in ASAP and buy an LGA 1151 socket board. Don't risk losing the board. The i5 4970k is a Socket 1150 processor.

The 4970k uses a 1150 socket while the 7700k uses the LGA 1151 socket. Going to need a new motherboard that is LGA 1151

We all learn from our mistakes. Yours just happens to be an expensive one. Next time, you should do more research. It'll be very beneficial as it'll avoid unfortunate situations such as this.

Probably not.  You able to post a pic?  the only way to know for sure is to test ii in the proper motherboard. Check your pins on your current motherboard to see if you bent any of them, while your at it.

The only way to know is testing it, could you take good quality photos of it and uploading in here so we can take a look? it might still be alright as long as you didn't force the shit out of it in that wrong socket.

You'll need DDR4 Memory as well.

:(

If you only damaged the substrate of the CPU it may be fine... But bent pins would be a problem. Also yeah you'll need a Z170 or Z270 motherboard, which have LGA 1151 sockets. As well as DDR4 as others have already said. Hopefully this will encourage you to do MORE research in the future.

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

Yeah the PCB on Skylake and Kabylake CPUs are pretty thing. Good chance it's ruined, but you won't know until you try it.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Doesn't look like it bent any contact points, so it may be fine... Only way to know for sure is to get a new motherboard and ram and try it.
