What green GPU for 1080p?

Watashi

Originally, I planned on getting the gtx 1070 for my new rig, but I only plan to be using a 144HZ 1080p monitor. Do you guys think that a 1070 is just complete overkill for 1080p? Let me know

Do you already have the display? because a free-sync display is going to cost less than a G-sync display, and a 480 is pretty solid for 1080p gaming, course not AAA games at ultra settings 144hz

I own a 1080 on a 144Hz gsync display and I'm really thankful for Gsync, as even it is not consistent at 144Hz, even at 1080. I'm made fun of sometimes for gaming at 1080 on a  1080, but at 144Hz, more than twice the framerate, I think it's worth it. I ditched my 970 for it, that's for sure.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

1070 is not overkill at all. I own one and rarely get over 90FPS on modern AAA titles with settings maxed

this is true.

Regardless, I recommend gsync OR freesync, whatever team you use, when going to 144Hz. Save your life from a tearing nightmare when you are bouncing between 110-144Hz, still a high framerate, and you wont' need to lower a ton of shit to make it super consistently 144Hz.

Love the HDMI port though, and it's a great screen.

Oh ya

Hidden feature of free-sync displays, or any display with multiple inputs

you can hook up all the inputs to set up eyefinity set ups

such as triple 4k or triple 1080p for screenshots

dunno why most g-sync displays only seem to have a single display port

A 1070 is really great for 1080p gaming. I can max out all of my games at at least 2560x1080 75Hertz. If you enjoy slightly older games, your experience will be amazing, and with NVIDIA cards you can DSR the game to a higher resolution, which is something most people don't talk about. I would suggest trying to go for a g-sync display, and screen tearing is atrocious at high frame rates.

My legit rig:

CPU: i5 6600k GPU: Asus Strix 1070 RAM: 16 GB of Corsair LPX CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 Motherboard:  Asus Z170I Pro Gaming Storage: Adata Sp550 120 GB and WD Black 3 TB Case: NZXT Manta Power Supply: EVGA 550 GS Monitors: 2 LG 25UM58-P Ultrawides Keyboard: Cooler Master Quickfire Rapid-i Mouse: Logitech G502 RGB

at 144HZ at 1080p the 1070 is not overkill with AAA games at high to ultra settings. What do you plan to play?

It's the way the licensed controller boards work, and I think it does reduce latency or whatever. I don't remember, but there's a somewhat valid reason. My screen does have HDMI, but I do believe it's a separate controller board. I can't of course rip it apart and see as it's still under warranty and at 400$ I ain't touching that, but it does take a long time to switch to and from HDMI, it's like it's rebooting or something.
