I'd use a ddr4 motherboard with ddr4 ram instead. DDR3 will work but the voltage is higher than what skylake is designed to handle and so in the long run you risk frying the CPUs memory controller. As well, try not to get a GPU with a blower cooler, since it will be a lot louder.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Go unlocked and take a Z170 board with DDR4. It can give you several years more useable lifespan.

Also take a SSD as main drive right away. The Samsung 750 series a great value. Go 250GB atleast and you can always add a HDD later if you need more storage.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

Will the 480 bottleneck with that cpu?

Yeah it looks better.

The cooler will also run hotter though so the clock speeds might be lower.

What do you mean

the "green label" corsair CX power supplies are of less than desirable quality, and especially when saying "gaming" and "a couple of years without upgrades" i really cant recommend going that way.

--

my suggestions overall would be to get a DDR4 motherboard and a 1x8GB stick of DDR4 memory, consider the option of an SSD if it fits into your budget, but it's *honestly* not a nightmare if it doesnt, just make sure you get a very decent hard drive instead.

and beyond that, yeah.. better power supply is defenately a thing i'll recommend here. a power supply is one of the few components in your system that in case of a fault can wipe out everything else, and is essentially near-infinitely reusable in future builds/upgrades.

But the PSU he has is they grey label and the lower wattage CXM ones are some of the best on the market (430/450)
