What GPU should I get?

BlazingGunnerFTW

Hi, I have some cash lieing around around and my poor 280 is chugging along but not very well. ToonBoom eats resources for breakfeast, lunch and dinner, and the card is hot and loud as hell. Gaming isn't much better either, as Ashes and OW have to have settings lowered in order to achieve anything considered tolerable, so I need a better card. My budget is from anything to 500 dollars, so keep that in mind.

I thought I had some money... Oh wait... I spent it all ;(

I'm gonna be stupid and say, wait for a discount on the 1080. I'm seeing a 560$ 1080 on PCPP right now.

On the low end of anything, a GTX 1060 or RX 480 (6GB and 8GB, respectively) would do you well.

On the high end of anything, stretch your budget by $40 and #YOLO

(I love my MSI Gaming X 1070)

Due to the general consensus, I will get a 1070. Any suggestions for which one I should get?

TBQH, they're all pretty good. Blower cards like the FE, ASUS Turbo and MSI Aero will run hotter and louder. Pricier cards like the MSI Gaming X and ASUS Strix come with higher clock speeds out of the box, but overclocking is a great equalizer there. They all come with the same 8GB of VRAM. The only ones I'd avoid this generation are the EVGA ACX 3.0 cards (SC, FTW variants). They had a very public series of cards burning themselves out, leading up to the revelation that EVGA's techs had left a very basic, very simple, very easy and cheap piece of thermal padding off when they designed the card. That's not to knock EVGA too badly--I loved their Maxwell cards, their customer service is great and there are no issues with their non-ACX 3.0 Pascal cards--but even though they've issued a fix, there's no guarantee you'd be getting a card with the fix already applied. Even if you do, the whole, "If they missed thermal pads, what else was overlooked?" bit keeps playing in my mind.

That said, if you're willing to take the chance of having to RMA your card the day you get it if it arrives without the thermal pads installed (or if they were installed improperly), my EVGA 1070 SC overclocked very well and ran quiet before I sold it off.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

RX470/RX480 is a good pair. You could get an RX480 and crossfire later, unless you prefer green team.

Mind you I am also using Cinema 4D, ToonBoom, Maya, and some other demanding software's. Plus, that would only provide a miniscule performance improvement over the 280.

being bias is stupid 1060 is not better than a 480 currently and in the future titles, if someone wants a good 1080p card 480 beats the 1060. on the 1440p side 1070 wins hands down no comparison.

You know it just clicked that you're using an r9 280, not a GTX 280. I'm special.

I'm not sure about 3d tools like that, but the RX470 is already much better than the r9 280 for gaming.
