This gpu with this motherboard.

Hello LTT forums!

 

I have a question about MSI's gtx 1080 X and my motherboard(MSI B85-G43 GAMING). Will these two hardware components function with each other, or will there be any problems that any of you know about? This might be a very stupid question but since I'm fairly new to the computer hardware world I genuinely don't know. I can go into more detail on my system if necessary.

As long as your motherboard has a PCIe [x16] slot, any GPU (or add-in card using the standard) should work.

yes because both of them use the pcie connector gen 3

You could plug it into a first-gen LGA 775 board with PCIe x16 and it'd work.

Thanks both of you! So the fact that on the motherboard specification page it says that DirectX11 is supported isn't a problem? Doesn't that mean that DirectX12 won't work on this motherboard? I thought that nVidia's most recent cards required DirectX12 to work.

DirectX 12 is supported only under Windows 10.

So if I have Windows 10 installed there still won't be any problems between this gpu and motherboard?

There shouldn't be any issue between any PCie device and a PCIe slot since the OS has no control over it. DirectX 11 is available on Windows 7/8/10, but DirectX 12 is only on Windows 10.
