So a console to PC person asked me what to get for his new gaming pc, he said his budget was at $700 max, so I am already breaking the budget because of a stupid disc tray that he needs to install windows
*EDIT* we have gone with the USB installation so that saves $20, and he is retrieving a copy of windows from his old laptop

that's the build, what do you guys think? any improvements you guys could make? thanks in advanced :D

Well you could do a swap. Use your own DVD drive to install WIndows then take it off.

for once i can't really improve on a build, well done.

Id get 2x4gb sticks of ram though for dual channel (what thepoint of 1600mhz ram if 800mhz ddr2 in dual channel has more bandwidth).

Id also go for a corsair 450-500w powersupply over that coolermaster, CM tends to build parts with a heavy eye on costs ive noticed.

oh and dont overclock on that board it only has a 4+1vrm in which case you might aswell get an any other board thats cheaper (get a 6+2 vrm or better)

pc's are never a "budget" option, chances are somewhere you're cheaping out where you shouldnt. best of luck with the conversion

Just use a stock cooler and save $30? He probably won't notice the difference nor will he probably overclock from the sounds of it.

a 7950 requires something like 250w on its own plus the cpu and board will want another hundred, your running it right on the limit, 550w+for a (single)79xx (its gold cert only gives it another few percent advantage)

that board is going to hold back that system too. i have a similar board i should know, sata3 ends all benefits to getting an ssd later on.

again, most of those changes would require more money, I'll just tell him this isn't the best PC, he doesn't need the best PC, he just wants something that will play his games

he won't be overclocking, but that CPU is kinda needed and AMD's stock fans are pretty bad

but he's going to play Battlefield which is more demanding on CPU's than other games

Even then, the 760K will be enough. I'd recommend grabbing a 212 Evo and oc'ing it a bit in the future. The 760K will oc a bit better than the 750K.

then here is the dilemma, I have that extra money, what do I do with it? I don't think he cares for an SSD, and if I get a beefier graphics card (7950) then it would make it more viable to get a FX 6300

If he doesn't care for a ssd, show him why he should. It's likely whoever says that has never used one before.

The 7870 XT is pretty close to the 7950 but the price difference isn't that small atm.
