maybe, but can I use an SSD With sata 2?

Sata 2 won't really bottleneck the ssd. What makes a ssd feel fast is the random read speed and seek time which is uninhibited by sata 2.

See if you can just get a USB to install Windows, if you really don't want to get a drive for it.

This^

A usb stick will likely cost less and be reusable.

as I said previously though, I don't think an SSD is the most useful thing, he wants better game performance, and he wants it to last, I'd get him a 2500K/3570K if I can but the budget is too tight to make those CPU's/Chipsets viable, so what would be a decent replacement, since these games are getting more demanding with next-gen

Then go ahead and bump up to the 6300. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1Wyri

Aren't tax and other fees going to destroy his budget though?

if he get's it off amazon, no

Up to you guys then.

The 6300 does have better performance but the 760K has a better value.

Most of the items aren't from Amazon though.

I know, removing that harddrive may give me the extra money needed to get the things on amazon

I was wondering about that, because I have to use a specific laptop for school/work.  It only has SATA 2 and I was wondering if it would be any improvement over my current drive.I BELIEVE this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148375

is my current drive (hard to tell with the security lock-downs on my laptop).  I would like a bigger and faster SSD because I am on this computer A TON and any bit in performance would be nice, especially reliability as at my location the terrible drives they keep using fail probably 2-3 times a year for every single user (partly because of ridiculous OS version we run).  I was thinking like an 840 EVO with around 256GB or MAYBE 500GB.  Opinion?

Yeah, you said 'removing the hard drive'.

If you know you have a seagate hdd, it's probably a momentus. If not, I'm guessing a WD scorpio blue or black.

It will be a huge improvement. Go ahead and get a ssd. What's your budget?

I would want to spend probably less than $300, hence why I would shy away from a 500GB version.  I am looking more price/performance here, because I am not really using it for any power user scenarios or massive reads/writes.  I work a lot with Office programs (Excel, Word, Project, Access, etc.)  I also do some gaming, but I only have a NVS-4200m card so it barely chugs along in freaking Age of Empires 2.

Alright, I will really look at that. Thanks for the help.  Now I won't have to worry about the whining driving crashing and losing hours of my work (happens quite often and emailing myself drafts and weekly backups are a pain to manage).

*EDIT* alright, we have changed the budget, it's now $700 and OS isn't included because he's getting it from his old PC he isn't going to use, here is what I think I'll plan on using

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1Wz1b

You left out the motherboard.

updated your's, no SSD (because gaming performance) what do you think?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1WOmM

Now it's missing a gpu?

If you really don't want a ssd and just want gaming performance: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1WXvA

I highly recommend getting the ssd though.

I know that, but my issue still lies with that CPU, with the money, I'd really perfer that he has something that's along the i5, and the 8320 fits the bill

I just loose some money for the GPU though, I think it's a more meaningful sacrifice as CPU will matter more when next gen rolls around, this is my assumption as we don't full know, but I can see how BF4 has it's improvements with a better CPU

For gaming, the 2 extra cores won't make up for the umph of the more powerful gpu.
